UFO 101 What is a UFO?

• Anything that is unidentified in the sky
• Many have prosaic explanations
• Others do not have conventional explanations
  (yet?)
• Still others are of high strangeness
• (Most Close Encounters fit this category)
• Sightings happen all around us more than you
  think...

Sighting

• Spring 1978
• Object passed close overhead Treetop level
• Seen by whole family and neighbors

UFO 101The Language of UFO Encounters

• Distant Encounter
• An object far away, unable to make out detail.
  
• Likely to have a prosaic explanation
• Low strangeness
• Close Encounter
• Phenomenon is up close and personal
• Much Higher strangeness
• First Kind (CE1) - you're here, it's there
• Second Kind (CE2) - It left something behind
• Third Kind (CE3) - you're here, they're there,
  but you can see them at a distance
• Fourth Kind (CE4) Abduction (beyond the scope
  of this talk)

• Mother and 2 daughters observed these as driving
  on Highway 12, west of Mpls
• 3 UFOs flying in formation near highway

• Object sharp turn against St. Paul skyline.
• Can establish geometry from cloud levels
• Direction change close to instantaneous
• Rapid acceleration

Radiation/Heat Effects The Cash Landrum UFO
Encounter

• Texas, 1980
• Three people in car encounter UFO hovering/slowly
  moving over road
• Two adults get out of car for better view
• Tremendous heat (microwaves?)
• Subsequent radiation sickness
• Subsequently one witness (Betty Cash) died from
  her injuries (Approx 15 years later)

Encounter

• Stephen Michalak Prospecting in Whiteshell
  Provincial Park, Ontario.
• Observed approach of two objects
• One landed in clearing
• Michalak approached.
• Sudden heat blast, ignited his shirt
• Subsequent radiation injury and geometric burns
• Treated at Mayo Clinic
• Case listed by RCMP as unexplained

• Trace found day later when doing winter prep
  work on yard
• Had not been there before
• Soil was cooked
• Heat?
• Microwaves?

Physical Landing Traces 545 P.M, April 24th,
1964, Soccoro, NM

• New Mexico Patrolman Lonnie Zamora heard loud
  noise while pursuing suspect.
• Broke off chase and investigated (concern about
  possible explosion)
• Observed landed object.
• Two small figures standing near object
• Figures got back in and object flew away.
• Subsequent investigation by Dr. J. Allen Hynek.

Evidence Case Delphos KansasNov 2, 1971

• 16 year old Ron Johnson tending sheep on his
  familys farm
• Observed object descend, hover, then ascend.
• Observed altered ring of soil
• Mother touched ring shortly after sighting. Skin
  on finger was numb for rest of her life.
• Extensive analysis of ring. Research still in
  progress on this case.
• No prosaic explanation

Extraordinary Characteristics of UFOs

• High speed
• Rapid acceleration
• Low speed
• Hovering
• Flight often silent
• Glowing/Heat/Radiation effects
• No rocket exhaust

What would we need to do to duplicate UFO
behavior?

• Control of inertia (g-forces)
• To prevent occupants from being squished by
  maneuvers
• No apparent rocket exhaust from objects
• High power
• for rapid acceleration and high speed
• Propulsion, Propulsion, Propulsion
• For travel over long interstellar distances in
  reasonable times
• Requires very high speed or a way to cheat
• Acceleration field propulsion
• Need to control/modify gravity (somehow)
• need to move beyond reaction (rocket) drive
• Interstellar flight (assuming ET origin)
• Thus, need to break light barrier

Advances currently in progress?

• Gravity physics
• Recent progress in understanding gravity
• "Zero point" physics
• String theory, Supersymetry, etc
• Dents in special relativity "C" speed limit
• Non-locality providing better understanding of
  reality
• I suggest we could have star drive in less than
  500 years

Being a skepticThe limitations of UFO
Investigation

• Were limited to UFO reports, rather then UFOs,
  themselves
• The "BS" factor in UFO studies
• Often get exaggerated claims, etc
• Need to be skeptical but understanding(!!!)
• Ambiguity
• Difficult to track down reliable cases hoaxes,
  lack of corroboration
• Challenges many of our current views/theories
• We dont have non-reaction drive (still FMA)
• Alien behavior is alien/paradoxical
• Limited evidence (the Fermi Paradox)
• Where are they? - E. Fermi
• Yet there is some physical evidence

Conclusions

• A real phenomenon
• Origin and nature unknown
• Capabilities are beyond current technology
• Challenges our present knowledge in nearly every
  area
• Physics, psychology, even religion
• UFO Behavior is understandable in principle
• I believe that UFOs are one of the biggest
  mysteries of our time.
