Title: The Platypus We are wondering what makes the platypus unique

1
The Platypus We are wondering what makes the
platypus unique?
By Taylor Tayler 2003
2
Where can we find this unusual animal?
A platypus lives in unpolluted fresh water
lakes, streams, or creeks in Eastern Australia.
It builds a burrow in the bank that is 20 to 52
feet long. There are several entrances to the
burrow above water level. They are well hidden
from their predators by over hanging reeds, grass
bushes. The platypus enters its chamber
reasonably dry. It is active at dawn and dusk.

What does the platypus look like?
A platypus looks like a seal. It is about the
size of a pet cat. It has a flattened brown body
and a broad tail. A platypus has an unusual
leathery black bill, or beak. It has thick
waterproof fur all over its body except for its
feet and bill. A male platypus grows up to 20
inches (500millemeters) long. A female platypus
grows op to 17 inches (430millemeters) long. A
platypuss tail grows to 5 inches (13centimeters)
long.

What does the platypus eat? What eats the
platypus?
A platypus dives into the water for its food of
water animals. The dive lasts for about 40
seconds under the water. The platypus has to move
his head from side to side to find its food under
water because he closes his eyes under water most
of the time. It takes the platypus about 12 hours
to collect all of its food. The platypuss enemy
is the echidna.
5
How does the platypus take care of its babies?
A platypus is a monotreme. It builds a nest in
the riverbank. Then gives birth from 1 to 3
rubbery eggs. A baby platypus is about an inch
long. The baby feeds on milk from patches on the
mothers belly. Baby platypuses stay with their
mother for 4-5 months. When they are born their
bluish eyes are closed and they have hardly any
fur.
6
How does the platypus communicate?
A platypus makes kind of a growl sound to
contact their neighbors. It also makes a growl
sound to let others know that this is my
territory. A platypus can also make a sound of a
broody hen. A young platypus uses those calls for
playmate calls.
7
What makes the platypus unique?
A platypus is a unique animal in the world
because it is only found in Eastern Australia. It
is also unique because it has many different body
parts. That seems to come from animals all over
the world. Like the platypuses feet are like a
duck and the tail just looks like a beavers
tail. It also gives birth from an egg. The male
platypus has a poisonous spur on its hind legs.
