Title: The Role of I'V'R'I' in Production and Supply of Veterinary Vaccines and Diagnostics in the Country

1
The Role of I.V.R.I. in Production and Supply of
Veterinary Vaccines and Diagnostics in the
Country By Dr. V. K. Chaturvedi Dr. K. D.
Pandey Division of Biological Products Indian
Veterinary Research Institute Izatnagar-243122,UP
2
  • India is a developing country having agriculture
    based economy.
  • The role of livestock in food production and as
    draft animal power is obvious.
  • IVRI was established in 1889 for research on
animal diseases and control of Rinderpest.
  • First Biological-Anti Rinderpest Serum-1901

3
  • Epoch making discovery of
  • GTV vaccine against Rinderpest and
  • R2B vaccine against NDV..helped in flourishing
    of livestock Poultry industry.
  • IVRI has significantly contributed in-
  • Research
  • Production of various Bacterial, Viral and
    parasitic vaccines
  • Control of diseases prevalent in the country

4
  • Government of India, launched rinderpest
eradication programme on a countrywide basis
during the second Five-Year plan (1956)..3rd
    4th cont..
  • The incidence of rinderpest in India came down
    with reduced mortality rates.
  • The use of GTV and TCRP vaccines for Rinderpest
has helped in control of this disease leading to
subsequent eradication of Rinderpest from India
    in the year 2000.
  • The use of vaccines against HS, BQ,
Enterotoxaemiea, Swine fever, Sheep pox, FMD, PPR
etc. has helped the farmers immensely by saving
their livestock from these diseases and improving
    the economy of livestock sector.

5
  • FMD is one of the most economically important
viral disease of cattle, sheep, goat and other
    cloven hoofed animals including pigs.
  • Research activities were initiated at IVRI,
Mukteswar. The first vaccine developed was
    Crystal Violet inactivated FMD vaccine.

6
  • The technology for production of FMD vaccine
using BHK-21 monolayer cultures and BHK-21
suspension cultures at IVRI Mukteswar/ Bangalore
    in 1970-80.
  • This revolutionized large scale production of FMD
vaccine during 1976 to 1986, boosting FMD control
    programme in India.
  • The institute is playing an active role in the
control of this important disease in
collaboration with Project Directorate on FMD and
Dept. of Anim. Husb. Dairying (DAHD).

7
  • At National level the Biological Products
Division is an important training center in the
    field of vaccinology and immunobiologicals.
  • The production technology of about 40 biologicals
has been transferred to State Veterinary Vaccine
    Production Institutes.
  • Thereby making them self sufficient to meet the
requirement of vaccines in their State.

  • The diagnostics like Tuberculin, Mallein, Johnin,
    Salmonella Diagnostics, Brucella Diagnostics,
have played a key role in disease investigation.
  • The development of newer diagnostics using Mab
antibodies and polyclonal sera, ELISA kits for
Rinderpest, PPR, Brucella and IBR have been used
by disease investigation laboratories in the
    country.
  • The development of newer methodologies and newer
    immunobiologicals is necessitated because of-
  • The cross breeding program,
  • Rural Development Program in Animal Husbandry
    Sector.
  • Emergence of exotic diseases.

15
  • The various viral vaccines developed, produced
and supplied by the Institute are
  • PPR Cell Culture Live Vaccine
  • Cell Culture Sheep Pox vaccine
  • Ranikhet Disease Vaccines R2B Strain F Strain
  • Fowl pox vaccine
  • Rabies cell culture vaccine
  • Lapinized Swine fever vaccines,
  • Foot Mouth Disease vaccine trivalent Oil
    Adjuvanted vaccine.
  • The control and eradication of African Horse
Sickness and Rinderpest has been achieved by the
use of vaccines against these diseases.
  • The other diseases like Swine fever, Sheep pox,
PPR and Goat pox can be eradicated from the
    country
  • By taking up National Eradication Program similar
    to Rinderpest.

16
  • The bacterial vaccines being produced and used
for the prevention and control of various
bacterial diseases of Cattle, Buffalo, Sheep,
    Goat, pig etc. are-
  • HS Oil Adjuvant vaccine / Aluminium Hydroxide gel
    vaccine
  • BQ vaccine
  • Enterotoxaemia vaccine
  • Brucella abortus strain-19 vaccine
  • Salmonella abortus equi vaccine
  • Anthrax Spore vaccine, C.C.P.P. vaccine etc.

17
  • The division of Biological Products, IVRI has
been producing the under mentioned diagnostics-
  • Sensitins- Tuberculin bovine PPD for diagnosis
of tuberculosis, Mallein PPD for diagnosis of
glanders, Johnin PPD for diagnosis of Johns
    disease.
  • Salmonella Diagnostics- Salmonellla pullorum
plain antigen, coloured antigen, positive serum,
Salmonella aboruts equi H antigen Salmonella
    O sera.

18
  • Brucella Diagnostics-
  • Brucella abortus serum agglutination test (SAT)
    antigen
  • Aboruts Bang Ring(MRT) antigen
  • Rose Bengal Plate Test antigen(RBPT)
  • Brucella abortus positive serum.

19
  • The division has been producing and supplying
    these immunobiologicals for diagnosis and
control of infectious diseases to various
    organization in the country viz.
  • Military Farms, Defense Units/Labs
  • Dairies, Sheep Farms,
  • Poultry Farms,
  • ICAR research institutes,
  • Medical Institutions and Laboratories,
  • Veterinary Colleges,
  • Medical Veterinary practitioners and
  • Farmers

20
  • The country is now geared up to meet the
    requirements of animal poultry vaccines
including diagnostics with the coming up of
    private and public enterprises-like
  • M/s Biomed Pvt. Ltd., Ghaziabad
  • Indian Immunologicals, Hyderabad
  • Indovax, Hissar
  • Intervet, Pune
  • Bio-vet, Pune
  • Ventri Biologicals, Pune etc.
  • The B.P. Section of various States.

21
  • The Biological Production Units in the country
are being upgraded and modified to meet the GMP
    standards.
  • With the economic boom, the livestock sector has
a bright future to meet the increasing demand of
    dairy animal products.
  • The future requirement of biologicals would need
research in developing diagnostic kits using mabs
    or recombinant protein/synthetic peptides,
purified cell culture based vaccines, recombinant
    vaccine against important disease like
    FMD/Rabies/Bird Flu etc.
  • The Institute is fully geared with its team of
scientists and infrastructure facilities to meet
the challenges in the field of animal health and
    production in the country.
