  • Using your understanding of the evolution of
    behavioural patterns in Japan explain what is
    going on in the film.
  • More specifically, explain why people are acting
    the way they do.
  • How do the needs for group orientation,
    individual expression, and to act according to
    universal values shape the behaviour of the
    people in the film?
  • What tensions are there between these different
    needs? How are the tensions resolved? What are
    their interrelationships?

    throughat school, at work, in the family, in
    sports clubs, where?
  • How are institutions, such as the educational
    system, womens roles, religion, the media,
    employment system, and political rights reflected
    in peoples behaviour?

    powerful or are newer forms taking shape and
    changing the way the people in the film act?
  • What authors agree with you? Why? Which authors
    disagree? Why?
  • Is what the director saying about Japanese
    society true? To what degree? What is he or she
    saying about Japanese society, politics or the
    economy?

  • A list of feature films available in the media
    resources of the library can be seen by searching
    the library media resources subset under Motion
    pictures, Japanese. You can choose from this
    list or any other Japanese feature film (not
    documentary).
  • Use your textbook and the additional texts placed
    on reserve to backup your thinking and
    statements. The use of other references is
    highly recommended.
  • Remember, you dont have to do a film analysis.
    Instead, you can do an essay on a topic of your
    choice. However, check your topic out with me
    first.

    developing your own arguments and supporting them
  • Develop a more insightful and appreciative
    understanding of society
  • Gain a greater appreciation of Japanese society

Essay Formats
  • An argument (or series of arguments) explaining
    the behavior in the film using theory and
    evidence from the film to support your viewpoint
  • Introduction tell the reader what you are going
    to do, i.e. what your argument (or analysis) is
    and how you are going to support it
  • Body a logical expression of your argument with
    supporting evidence, e.g.
  • Chronologic or sequential
  • Separate groups of evidence or arguments
  • Main topics
  • Conclusion summary and brief tying together of
    sub-arguments and evidence to support main points
    or conclusion.
