3
Faecal Microbe Reservoir Models
Tool to estimate reservoir sizes for cattle,
sheep and waterfowl Model Inputs (cattle and
sheep) - Animal numbers - Microbial counts in
fresh faeces - Survival in deposited
faeces - Leaching rates from deposited faeces
Models intended to be stand-alone, and as
inputs to farm and catchment scale models
developed by AgResearch, NIWA, and Landcare
4
Faecal Microbe Reservoir Models
Completed - National survey of dairy cattle
(Elaine Moriarty) - Microbial survival in cow
pats (Lester Sinton) - Microbial survival in
sheep faeces (Elaine Moriarty) Underway - Surve
y of sheep faeces (Elaine Moriarty) - Survey of
waterfowl faeces (Elaine Moriarty) Proposed - L
eaching rates from deposited faeces (Louise
Weaver) - Survival in wildfowl faeces (Elaine
Moriarty)??
5
National Survey of Dairy Cattle
Sampled 10, separate, fresh, cow pats - Four
dairy farms - Waikato, Manawatu, Canterbury,
Southland - Four times a year - 155
pats Bacteria - E. coli, enterococci,
Campylobacter, Salmonella, STEC Protozoans - Gi
ardia, Cryptosporidium
6
National Survey Results
No Salmonella detected Two samples positive
for STEC 4.5 positive for Giardia - Low
counts (1 17 g-1) - Autumn only - Waikato and
Manawatu 5.2 positive for Cryptosporidium - L
ow counts (1 25 g-1) - Autumn only - Waikato
and Manawatu

9
Survival in Cattle Faeces
Placed 10, replicate, composite, pats on
pasture - Each of 4 seasons - Half the pats
used to sample E. coli, faecal streptococci and
enterococci - Seeded half the pats with
Campylobacter and Salmonella - Sampled until
disintegration (usually around 5 months)
