Attraction Action
  • By
  • Eddie M. Hill

2
Objectives
  • 1. Students will be able to recognize that
strength of a magnet and the distance it is from
an object will effect its ability to attract or
    repel the object
  • 2. Investigate the effect motions and forces have
    on objects (BM9 5th grade )

3
Materials
  • 2-4 Ceramic Ring Magnet
  • Neodymium magnet
  • Clear tape
  • Magnetic thinking putty or ooblick
  • See recipe for making ooblick

4
Non-Newtonian Fluid
  • Ooblick Recipe 1 (Ooze)
  • measuring cups and spoon
  • 1 cup of dry cornstarch
  • large bowl or pan
  • food coloring (if you want)
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • ???
  • Put the cornstarch into the bowl. Add a drop
or two of food coloring. Add water slowly, mixing
the cornstarch and water until all the powder is
    wet.

Solid/Liquid
  • Ooblick Recipe 2
  • Bowl 1
  • 1. Place 4 oz (1/2 cup) of white glue
    (Ross/Lepages) in bowl
  • 2. Add ½ cup of water and a few drops of food
    coloring
  • 3. Mix together in same bowl
  • Bowl 2
  • 1. Add ¾ -1 teaspoon borax powder to bowl
  • 2. Add ½ cup of water and stir until the borax
    is almost dissolved
  • 3. Add contents of bowl 1 to bowl 2and squish -
    have fun!

6
Explore and Observe
  • Free exploration with
  • ooblick

7
Are you Attracted to me???
  • Stick two pieces of tape to the table
  • Rub tape against table
  • Pull one piece off quickly.
  • Predict what will happen when tape is held close
    to ooblick
  • Hang tape freely from side of desk
  • Bring the tape close to but not touching
ooblick (use second piece of tape of 1st piece
    touches ooblick)
  • Observe and record results

8
Blob Attack
  • Place a Neodymium magnet (strong magnet) on the
    table
  • Predict what will happen when you place ooblick
    near strong magnet
  • Place a glob or ball of ooblick appropriately 2cm
    from magnet
  • Observe and record what happens

9
Caught in the Middle
  • Place ooblick on table
  • Stack two ceramic ring magnet together
  • Stand vertically on opposite sides of the ooblick
  • Predict what will happen
  • Observe and record
  • Next, turn one magnet to the opposite use
  • Observe and record

10
You are the Magician
  • Stand the magnet up vertically
  • Make the magnet roll without touching it.
  • Barely touch the magnet with the ooblick
  • Make the magnet move for an extended period of
    time

11
Pressing Questions
  • What properties can be
  • associated with the ooblick?
  • Based on what you know about magnetism, what
ingredient is not given in the ooblick recipes?
  • How was the clear tape charged?
  • What force caused movement by the magnet that was
    at rest ?

12
Further Investigation
  • Extend one of the activities time several
attempts, making a chart and graph
  • Design your own experiment using ooblick and
    magnets
  • Share your experiment with a friend or the class
  • Search the web. Why does ooblick have some
properties of solids and some of liquids?
  • Check out Crazy Aarons Tricks
  • www.puttyworld.com/magnets.html
