Title: Pictures for Initial Sound Fluency Practice

Pictures for Initial Sound Fluency
Practice These are pictures for Initial Sound
Fluency practice. They come from Microsoft Clip
Art. About 32/90 of the picture words come from
the K Progress Monitoring for Initial Sound
Fluency, Fifth Edition. After this slide, the
next 10 slides are the pictures and then the
following 10 slides are the words for the back of
the pictures. My suggestion is to print (on card
stock) the 10 slides (slides 2 - 11), then
re-insert the pages into your printer so that the
names of the pictures print out on the back of
the cards (slides 12 21) . Make sure that the
correct word is printing on the back of the
correct picture before you print them all! My
suggestion is that teachers use these to help
with instruction on Initial Sound Fluency. With
these cards, the teacher could use some of them
as a drill. (Tell me the initial sound in the
following words.) Also, the teacher could put
only two pictures in front of the child and then
work up to four pictures as the student is able
to handle more pictures. I suggest using similar
wording as the DIBELS assessment This is yolk.
What is this? (yolk). This is umpire. What is
this? (umpire). Which picture starts with /u/?
What sound does yolk start with? (/y/) Both of
these examples are practice activities for the
student. I hope you will find these helpful as
you help children develop initial sound
fluency. Dr. Carolyn Keasal, ARI Regional
Reading Coach
