Y Ddraig Goch or Red Dragon is the
national flag of Wales. It is not known exactly
how the dragon came to be on the flag but it is
thought to have been carried in battle by the
early Celts. It is one of the oldest flags in
the World and its unique design means it is one
of the most identifiable flags anywhere.
National Emblems The leek is the national
emblem of Wales. It is thought Welsh soldiers
wore leeks in their hats during battles to
distinguish them from their enemies. We also
have the daffodil as a national emblem. This is
because the Welsh word for leek and daffodil is
the same Cenhinen (leek) and Cenhinen Pedr
(daffodil). This means that both have been
adopted as our national emblem.

St Dwynwens Day 25th January
Romance will be in the air across Wales as Welsh
people celebrate St Dwynwen's Day. She is the
Welsh patron saint of lovers, making her the
Welsh equivalent of St. Valentine. Her feast day,
25 January, is often celebrated by the Welsh
with cards and flowers, just as is 14 February
for St. Valentine.

Saint David's Day (Welsh Dydd Gwyl Dewi) is the
feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of
Wales, and falls on 1 March each year. A poll
conducted for Saint David's Day in 2006 found
that 87 of the Welsh wanted it to be a bank
holiday On this day many people wear daffodils,
the traditional national flower of Wales.

and the Czech Republic. The project entitled
CYRIL will look at informal language and culture
learning. The first meeting regarding this
project was held here at Deeside College in
November.  Taking part are Non Lewis Edwards and
Sara Bishop, who will be visiting the other
partners over the next two years. We are
currently developing new projects for next
academic year, particularly looking at workforce
development.  If you have a project idea that you
would like to work on then please call Ext 4154,
email myself or Vicky Ashley, or call into the
External Funding office.
