Title: THE EPIPHANY

THE EPIPHANY

How Epiphany Began
  • Its the feast which recalls the visit of the
Kings Magi to the child Jesus in the night
between the 5th and the 6th of January. The
Kings Magi were the priests of the religion in
that time. Those three men, driven by the comet
star, gave 3 precious gifts to Jesus gold,
incense and myrrh. Arriving near a house they
decided to stop to ask for directions. They
knocked on the door and an old woman came to open
the door. The Kings Magi asked the old one to
join them, but she refused because she had much
work to do. After the three kings had gone, the
woman understood that she had made a mistake and
decided to join them to go to find the Child
Jesus. But she was not able to find them and then
stopped every child to give him a gift in the
hope that this was Child Jesus.

Symbols
  • The symbols of the epiphany are the comet star,
the Kings magi who take gold, incense and myrrh,
the old woman on a broom who gives gifts to the
good boys and coal to the bad ones.

Customs and Habits
  • Every year, in the Epiphany evening the old woman
searches for Jesus and stops at every home where
there is a child to leave a gift, if he has been
good, or coal, if instead he was bad. In the
morning children find gifts. All children move
the Kings Magi in front of Jesus in the crib. At
lunch the cappelletti, a kind of pasta, is
    eaten.
