Alcohol
  • Is it a drug?
  • Or
  • Is it just fun?

3
What is it?
  • Alcohol is a clear drink that is made from corn,
barley, grain, rye, or a beverage containing
    ethyl.

4
How do you consume it?
  • You drink it. Either in shots, or as a mixed
drink. Beer is chugged mostly by teens, and wine
is more of an adult beverage.

5
How is Alcohol made?
  • It is made by adding yeast to a substance that
contains sugar. The yeast starts the formation
process, which turns sugar into ethyl and carbon
    dioxide gas.

6
How is Beer made?
  • Beer is made from barley malt. The people who
brew the beer soak the barley in water to make it
sprout. When the barley dries, they take off the
sprouts only leaving starch, or malt. The malt is
ground up and mixed up with water to form mash.
This is put into another mash which contains corn
or rice that has been crushed and heated. The
starch from corn or rice is then changed to
sugar. Some dried flowers are added to the mash
to add flavor, then the mash is fermented. Then
the brewers age the beer for several weeks to add
    taste in the beer.

7
Distilled beverages
  • Another type of alcoholic beverage is called a
distilled beverage. That is made from fermented
grain mash or fermented juice. Distilled
beverages include drinks such as whiskey, vodka,
liqueurs, gin, rum, and other beverages. Drinking
alcohol damages the liver, kidneys, and lungs.

8
Types
9
What does it do to you body?
  • 20 is absorbed into they stomach
  • 80 is absorbed into the small intestine
  • Everything depends on if you have a full or empty
    stomach
  • How fast your body oboes alcohol
  • Once it is absorbed into the tissue, it effects
    the MIND and BODY

10
What it do to yo brain?
  • Acute alcohol intoxication is result of changes
in regional brain functions thus made apparent by
changes in normal brain metabolism.  The greater
the amount of alcohol the greater the affect on
your brain.  A study that examined 13 brain areas
    during intoxication showed decreased absolute
metabolism for all 13 areas. The occipital lobe
    (vision), cerebellum (balance, attention,
movement), and temporal lobe (hearing), showed
    the greatest affect.

11
What it docont
  • Although all areas showed metabolic decreases,
just knowing that these three areas showed the
most decrease explains why intoxicated people
    show the typical drunk signs.

12
Effects
  • Causes you to act in ways that you wouldnt
    normally act.
  • Drinking too much (binge drinking) can cause
alcohol poisoning, which can lead to coma and
    even death.
  • Alcohol use increases the risks of liver damage,
mouth, throat, esophagus and larynx cancer and
    heart disease.

13
What are the risks of coming dependent?
  • 45 percent of those who begin drinking alcohol
before the age of 14 become alcohol dependent at
some time in their lives, compared with 10 of
those who wait at least until age 21.
  • Early drinking onset has been linked to
    unintentional injuries, car crashes, physical
    fights, unplanned sex, and academic
    underachievement in teens.
  • Each year, an estimated 7,000 people under the
age of 21 die from alcohol-related injuries.

14
Where can they get help?
  • If you have a drinking problem and are underage,
the first thing to do is to tell someone. Either
a counselor, your parents, a teacher.
  • Then they can help you find somewhere a program
or a place to get you clean and away from the
substance, and teach you how to cope with
    alcoholism.
