  • Established in 2004 through collaboration with
    the Tu family
  • Over 1000 books and 200 magazines
  • Volunteering librarians were the Tu family
    members
  • Closed since last summer due to lack of time
  • Past DC work
  • 2005 Jiangxi team helped with getting media
    attention
  • 2006 Jiangxi team conducted a puppet show and
    helped with promotions
  • DC and the Tu family (big brother Tu Jiong, and
    younger sister Tu Xiaohua)
  • kept in close contact throughout the years

  • Library conditions when we arrived
  • 3rd to 5th graders and teachers all have library
    cards (around 200)
  • Library opened to students every Monday and
    Friday lunch time
  • - Operation largely depended on availability of
    librarian Tao laoshi
  • 1000 borrowing/returning activities recorded
  • 42 members never borrowed and 42 borrowed over
    10 times
  • Computer was taken away last term
  • Lost library cards never replaced
  • 16 lost books out of 470

  • - From TXX 200 books for 1st and 2nd graders
    (type I)
  • 800 books for 3rd to 5th graders (type II)
  • 50 books for teacher (type III)
  • - From Ai Xin Yi Jiao book rental 100 books for
    1st and 2nd graders (type I)
  • All type II and type III books were added to
    existing electronic management
  • system
  • We suggested weekly reading class for 1st and
    2nd graders
  • students can borrow 2 books at a time
  • compensation-based lost card
    replacement (2 yuan)

  • Students already highly familiar with public
    library practice
  • Librarian Tao laoshi is responsible and has

    recognition/compensation
  • - Many teachers lack initiative in library usage
  • Computer may be borrowed

  • The Kids!
  • I was able to teach three classes two grade 2
    and one grade 1
  • Grade 2 students were more shy most did not
    have a firm grasp on English at all
  • Grade 1 students were extremely energetic and
    eager to show me how well they comprehended the
    language and wanted to continue to improve

  • Grade 1 teachervery strict, concentrates mainly
    on vocabulary and sentence structure
  • Grade 2 teachervery laidback, will revert back
    to speaking Chinese if no one responds to his
    English questions
  • Grade 3 teacherhas the best English,
    concentrates mainly on listening comprehension
    and grammar

  • Focused on confusing grammar points, sentence
    structure, vocab, and pronunciation
  • Encouraged them to come up with their own
    creative sentences
