Environment for e-Government
  • A good national information and communication
    infrastructure is conducive to e-government. At
    present Malawi has-
  • A growing ICT literacy rate
  • One PSTN Operator
  • Two reliable GSM Operators, 42,500 subscribers
  • Nine operational ISPs, total users 4,800
  • A Regulatory Telecommunications Authority (Macra)

e-Business in Malawi
  • Level of e-business would also determine due
    level of e-Government.
  • At present the e-Business available is largely
    remote banking facility which allows an account
    holder to check balance and transfer funds
    between accounts within the commercial banks. The
    other form of e-Business is the electronic wallet
    provided by the New Building Society through
    Malswitch.

e-Government an impetus to Private Sector
  • Despite relatively minimal e-services and
    e-processes within the government of Malawi, the
    current e-Services and e-Processes are creating
    an impetus to the private sector.
  • Provision of e-government solutions (internet..)
  • Increase in sales of other commodities

Challlenges..
  • Presently there are several challenges that are
    being addressed
  • Inadequate ICT expertise
  • Absence of ICT Policy
  • High cost of Internet
  • Absence of national ICT strategic plan

Action plan
  • A Malawi National ICT committee has been put in
    place to develop a National ICT Policy and plan.
  • More ISP and Cellular Operation Licences are
    being issued by Government through Macra.
  • More ICT related courses being introduced and
    offered at all levels of education.
