  • Replace existing Frame Relay configuration with
    Multiprotocol Level Switching Virtual Private
    Network.
  • Design a Virtual Private Network over MPLS, with
    the following features
  • Highly scalable routing and optimal use of
    network resources for any-to-any IP connectivity.
  • Integration of data and voice networks in one
    converged infrastructure
  • To build on the foundation of point-to-point
    layer 2 MPLS VPNs to support client-server
    relationship.

Project Overview
  • Design
  • Our design consisted of five Cisco 2851 routers,
    two T1 links, two Shoretel, two D-link hubs and a
    Gigabit Switch. Our design also consisted of a
    dedicated Voice Server which provided the
    backbone of the VoIP services.
  • The MPLS network was setup by encapsulating the
    Frame Relay configuration with a OSPF over RIP
    connection.
  • Technical Approach
  • In Frame-Mode MPLS, routers running MPLS exchange
    pure IP packets as well as labeled IP packets
    with one another in an MPLS domain.
  • Labels are assigned to IP networks reachable by a
    router and then imposed on data packets forwarded
    to those IP networks.
  • We used BGP, RIP V2, OSPF to define the routing
    protocols.

    Switch, Datalink and other network hardware.

  • Successfully transported layer 2 packets across
    MPLS network and encapsulated Frame Mode
    transport protocol.

  • Successful implementation of Shoretel Voice
    Server across the network for voice communication
    using IP Phones.

Project Conclusions/Outcomes
  • Configured Frame Mode MPLS using a 32-bit label
    that is inserted between the Layer 2 and Layer 3
    headers. After the configuration the Layer 2
    encapsulations Frame Relay, and Ethernet are
    frame-based , which can now operate in Frame
    Mode.
  • Tied together all of the router edges into a
    unified voice and private data network.
  • Securely connected all of our workstations in a
    fully meshed network.
  • Configured a MPLS network with minimal packet
    loss over an IP backbone while providing
    protection and decent security.
