Friendly Letter format
  • Letters can be friendly or formal. A friendly
    letter is a little like a long-distance
conversation in writing. You can share your
thoughts and feelings, some exciting news, or
whats been happening in your life. E-mail
messages are usually friendly, but can be formal,
depending on the purpose and audience.

Formal Letter format
  • People write formal letters to a business or
organization for different purposes, such as
    requesting information, giving an opinion,
seeking employment, making a complaint, placing
an order, joining a club or group, making a
recommendation, or requesting than an action be
taken by the business or organization. You might
write a formal letter to a magazine or a
newspaper, such as a letter to an editor to
express an opinion or reaction to a particular
article, or a letter to a columnist asking for
advice. Formal letters use language in a
particular way, and follow a specific format.
The language should be polite and natural, but
not chatty like a friendly letter you might
write to a relative or friend.

11
Formal structure
  • Salutation usually begins with Dear and is
always followed by the persons full name and a
    colon.
  • Body of the letter clearly and concisely states
the purpose of the letter, provides sufficient
information, and summarizes your request or
    opinion.
  • Closing usually contains sincerely, yours
sincerely, yours truly and the writers full
    signature.
  • Always use formal language. No slang. You know
    what Im saying yo
