Title: The Legacy of the Lunchbox

1
The Legacy of the Lunchbox
  • Renae Motte

2
Late 1800s
  • The original lunchbox was actually called a
lunch pail. It was a heavy-duty metal pail
used to carry and protect the noon meal for
    working men.

3
1880s
  • Young school children began the lunch pail
trend, by using old colorful tin boxes from
biscuits and cookies to carry their lunches to
    school.

4
1902
  • The first childrens lunchbox was manufactured in
1902. It was shaped like a picnic basket, and
had pictures of playing children lithographed on
    the sides.

5
1935-1950
  • After WWII, the Aladdin company
  • began to mass produce decaled
  • lunchboxes for school children.

6
Competition in 1953
  • The Thermos company then entered the
    competition making their lunchboxes more
    attractive, by placing brightly colored
lithographs on every side of the box, instead of
just a decal on the front.

7
1957 NOvelty
  • To lower costs the Aladdin company created domed
boxes. They hoped the new shape would increase
    sales.

8
1962
  • Next came the vinyl lunchbox.
  • However, the lack of style and
  • Durability quickly made these
  • lunchboxes unpopular, and
  • sales plummeted.

9
1972
  • Companies began to produce plastic lunch boxes.
Once again their efforts failed, and the decline
in the production of lunch boxes continued. By
the mid-90s, only one manufacturer remained.

10
1998-present
  • With a push toward healthy eating in America, the
popularity of lunchboxes has increased. The
designs are more contemporary and innovative than
    ever.
