PROFILE
  • Population - Approx. 800,000 4 persons per
    Km², 5 ethnic groups
  • Health11 of National Budget
  • 10 Regions - health budget controlled centrally
  • HIV transmission mainly heterosexual, also MSM
    and CSW
  • Treatment with HAART started- 2002
  • 18 ART sites including 2 private hospitals

Adaptation in Guyana Context

Response
  • Decentralizing HIV services to community level
  • Training staff already present at health centers
  • Integrating TB and HIV services strengthen
    adherence support for both (DOTS) and HIV
  • This model could be used to strengthen the health
    care systems and address other chronic diseases

Challenges
  • Training- removing workers from their sites,
    possible more than 1 training
  • buy- in from other Physicians both Public and
    private including practicality of training PP
  • supervision

Future Plans
  • Guyanas implementation
  • Rapid role out- health workers initially trained,
    assigned health facilities within Region 4,
    including city, responsible for training members
    of health facility
  • Region 4 covers approx. 60 of the population
