How did it all begin?

• Around 500 B.C., Greek rebels rebelled against
  the Persians in Asia Minor (east)
  
• Athens helps rebels, but later crushed when
  Persians invade Greece under Xerxes
  
• Sparta comes to their aid
• Greek navy defeats the Persian navy and ends the
  Persian Wars 479 B.C.

• An alliance of 140 city-states
• Controlled by Athens, non-democratic
• Polis paid money and sent ships to the League
• Athens built an empire based on the League by the
  450s

  wealth
  
• Democracy expanded (for all men except lowest
