Examples of Mechatronic Products
  •
  • Hard disk drive
  • Camcorder
  • Mobil Robot
  • MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems)
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS )

7
  • Mechatronics Education at Assiut University
  • Mechatronics Program has been introduced
  • in 1997 Curricula as the first mechatronics
  • UG program in national Egyptian Universities.
  • The program is designed to fill the gap
  • between practicing mechanical, electronics,
  • and control engineers in industry as realized
  • during training programs and consultation in
  • various industrial companies in Egypt.

8
  • The program started in the year 2000/2001 with 22
    senior mechanical engineering students.
  • In the current year (2004/2005) the number of
    students is 45.
  • The program includes subjects (courses) from
    mechanical and electrical engineering programs.

9
Summary of the Project
  • This project is concerned with the development of
five mechatronics core courses for undergraduate
students enrolled in mechatronics program as a
part of mechanical engineering program, Faculty
    of engineering, Assiut University.

10
  • The courses include
  • Introduction to Mechatronics
  • Mechatronics system design
  • Programmable logic controller (PLC)
  • Mechatronics laboratory
  • Graduation project

11
Objectives
  • Provide students with better understanding of the
philosophy, design approach and applications of
    Mechatronics.
  • Improve the students practical skills.

12
  • Maximize the use of educational resources by
publishing the developed material on the www and
    in multimedia forms
  • Enhance the process of teaching and learning for
both staff members and students at Assiut and
    other Egyptian universities.

13
Expected Output/ Outcomes
  • Syllabuses of the developed courses.
  • Teaching materials of the five courses
  • Courses in multimedia forms published on the
    www
  • Mechatronics laboratory with new experiments
  • Qualified staff in mechatronics

14
Expected Output/ Outcomes
  • Qualified students with good practical skills and
    better understanding of Mechatronics.
  •  Educational resources that enhance the process
of teaching and learning for both staff members
and students at Assiut and other Egyptian
    Universities.

15
Main Activities
  • Management (preparing the detailed implementation
plan of the project and managing the project
    activities,..)
  • Implementation (developing the syllabi, the
teaching materials and the experiments of the
    five courses)

16
Main Activities
  • Quality control and monitoring (Assessing the
developed courses by experts in mechatronics, and
    arranging two workshops)
  • Dissemination and sustainability (publishing the
    developed courses on the WWW)

17
The Achieved output/outcomes
  • A meeting room assigned to the Project team at
the mechanical Eng Dept., equipped with computer,
printer and connection to the Internet.
  • A web page for the project http//www.aun.edu/mech
    atronics/mecha.htm

18
  • Syllabi of the five courses
  • First workshop on mechatronic education at
    Assiut University
  • http//www.aun.edu/mechatronics/mech w.htm
  • Experts reports before and after the meetings
    and the workshop
  • Revised syllabi of the five courses
  • Specifications of the required equipment

19
  • List of the revised software packages required
    for the developed courses
  • Purchase of the references related to the
    developed courses
  • Implementation of the developed courses
(selection of seven Graduation Projects started
    on October 2004)
  • Purchase orders of the required software packages
  • Mechatronic class room equipped with computer,
multimedia projector and connection with the
    Internet

20
  • Equip the Mechatronics Lab with computers, Local
area network and Connections to the Internet
  • Installation of the DYNAST software
  • Draft of the teaching material of some parts of
    the developed Courses

21
  • Total Expenditure (LE in LE) from 1st April
    2004 to 31st December 2004

22
Evaluation by the management team
  • Most of the planned activities were achieved
    properly on time.
  • The impact of the international experts on the
project activities forms a corner stone on the
    target of the project
  • Reports, and paper works consumes a lot of time
which hinderers the technical progress of the
    project

23
Evaluation by the foreign expert
  • Overall the course proposal forms a sound
foundation of a Mechatronics engineering degree
    programme
  • I congratulate the people who initiated this
programme at the Assuit University and wish them
    every success in this project.
  • Dr Memis Acar
  • Loughborough University, UK
