  • Over the past 100 years, the Earth's global mean
    surface temperature has increased by between 0.4
    to 0.8 Celsius.
  • The World Meteorological Organization reports
    that the 10 warmest years in the past 140 have
    all occurred since 1983.
  • Some of this change may be natural, but over the
    past 200 years human activity has altered the
    world's atmosphere, and there is increasing
    evidence that these atmospheric changes are
    having an influence on the climate through the
    enhanced greenhouse effect.

According to Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory, "the earth would warm by 8
degrees Celsius (14.4 degrees Fahrenheit) if
humans use the entire planets available fossil
fuels by the year 2300.
  • Models referenced by the Intergovernmental Panel
    on Climate Change (IPCC) predict that global
    temperatures are likely to increase by 1.1 to 6.4
    C (2.0 to 11.5 F) between 1990 -2100.

Coal is still the primary source of supply for
commercial energy in India. Coal consumption
increased from 140 million tonnes in 1984 to
about 400 million tonne in 2004 with a growth
rate of 5. Thermal power plants using coal
account for 60 of our total generation
capacity.( Integrated energy Policy, 2005,PI,
GoI). Coal shall remain Indias most competitive
fuel choice for power generation over the next
25-50 years.
