Columbian Drug Wars
  • The country of Columbia has been torn by civil
    wars for decades. In the recent years, the rebels
    have become financed by the trade in illegal
    drugs. The U.S. government has sent about one
    billion dollars to the Columbian government to
    aid its fight against guerrillas. Coca
    production has doubled since 1996 and is still
    expanding. Some 500,000 families grow coca, opium
    poppies and marijuana because they have few other
    choices in raising their incomes.
  • Groups of individuals with economic and political
    power emerged in the 1970s and formed
    paramilitary groups. They used violence to
    protect their interests and as they grew stronger
    they began to be absorded and runby drug cartels.

    grower contributing 13-16 of the total world
