JULY RECRUITING
Educate your top prospects, parents, summer
coaches, and high school coaches about the
purpose of an evaluation period explain the
communication and contact restrictions.
Send the July Recruiting Prospective
Student-Athletes primer via email or mail with
prospects (coaches parents) on or after June 15
of their sophomore year. Likewise, send the
primer to summer/high school coaches of younger
prospects.
Sit in the designated coaches seating areas
remember that the purpose of the July period is
to evaluate.
Sitting in the designated section prevents any
contact with prospects, coaches, and/or family
members. Do not stand under baskets or position
yourself where contact could occur. Tournament
directors know that it is a requirement to
designate such areas.
On occasion, incidental contact is unavoidable.
Hopefully, the prospects have been told that
anything in exchange of a greeting is prohibited
by NCAA rules. When you choose to put yourself
in a position where contact is most possible and
contact does occur, it is a violation regardless
of what you subsequently say or do.
Do your best to avoid incidental contact with a
prospect, parent, family member, coach, etc. Be
proactive by not positioning yourself in parking
lots, hotels, airports, restaurants or concession
stands. At times when contact is unavoidable, a
greeting is acceptable, but the contact should be
quickly ended with Im sorry, but NCAA rules
prohibit us from speaking at this time. Whether
in an airport, at a hotel, at a restaurant, etc.,
there wont always be a pair of eyes watching
your actions its important that coaches choose
to do the right thing.
Remember during the July evaluation period,
COMMUNICATION via email or phone with prospects,
family members, and summer coaches is prohibited
while the prospect is competing or attending an
event. This prohibition continues in between
tournament games and during team travel to and
from events. Know when it is appropriate to
communicate with all individuals.
The best way to know when its appropriate to
COMMUNICATE WITH summer coaches and/or prospects
is to know their schedule in advance. However,
if thats not the case, you can COMMUNICATE WITH
their high school coach if he is not on-site at
the event. Another alternative would be to check
websites, twitter pages, etc. that would
potentially have the teams updates and remaining
schedules.
