  • European countries gained access to Africas
    resources by establishing colonies across the
    continent.

  • After WWII, many European colonies in Africa
    fought for, and gained, independence.

  • 1974
  • Other countries in Africa did not gain
    independence until the mid-1980s!!

  • Kwame Nkrumah wanted Africans across the world to
    unite together.
  • He was a leader in the Pan-African movement.

  • The Igbo seceded from Nigeria
  • 1967- The Republic of Biafra was created and
    lasted about 3 years.
  • This led to a civil war which was lost by the
    Igbo.
  • The country was reunited in 1970.

    democracy.
  • Officially, it is a federal republic.
