2
Properties of Radium
  • Radium is an alkaline earth metal
  • Radium has a melting point of 700C
  • It has a boiling point of 1140C
  • Pure, it is bright white, but it blackens upon
    exposure to air
  • Decomposes in water
  • It emits Alpha, Beta, and Gamma rays
  • Produces neutrons when mixed with Beryllium
  • 1 gram of Radium produces 0.0001 ml of radon gas
a day, so it must be ventilated to prevent the
    build- up of such gas

3
Uses of Radium
  • Is used to produce neutrons
  • Used to make luminous paints
  • Used in medical radioisotopes
  • Also used as a gamma ray source
  • One isotope, radium-226, is used commercially

4
Some Interesting Facts
  • The name Radium comes from the Latin word radius,
    or ray
  • Radium is found in pitchblende, or uraninite, and
    all uranium minerals
  • The person who discovered it, Marie Curie, died
later from being exposed to it.
  • It was discovered in 1898 in France
