  • Worldwide
  • In 2004, 46 million people were living with
    HIV/AIDS
  • 14000 people contract HIV daily 10 people
    per minute
  • Since first detected in early 1980s over 60
    million people have become infected over 20
    million have died
  • In 2004, 4.9 million people were infected with
    HIV, over 600,000 of those were under age 15
    years
  • 60 of all people infected with HIV live in
    Sub-Saharan Africa
  • 25 million children will be orphaned by AIDS by
    2010

Suffer the Children
  • 2.2 million children living with HIV in 2004
  • 13.4 million children orphaned by AIDS
  • Percentage of orphans in Africa increased from 2
    before AIDS to 15 in 2001
  • 95,000 elementary-aged children in Kenya have
    lost a teacher
  • 40 of orphans are raised by grandmothers, 30 by
    aunts and uncles
  • Grandmothers are caring for up to 18 children

Help is needed
  • HIV prevention, care and treatment
  • Help provide basic public health needs e.g. safe
    water, sanitation, healthcare, safe motherhood,
    nutrition, etc
  • Respite and daycare needed for children
  • Reinforce communities and community institutions

  • Mobilizing its tremendous resources and like
    Polio Plus use its political leadership and
    advocacy to effectively combat the HIV/AIDS
    pandemic
  • Supporting the Millennium goals of the UN to
    eliminate gross poverty by 2015
  • Encourage Canadian government to commit funds
  • Being aware of the facts of the HIV/AIDS pandemic
  • Support a project in sub-Sahara Africa that
    supports the survivors of AIDS
  • Support a project sub-Sahara Africa that helps
    alleviate poverty (water, health, agriculture,
    micro-business, etc)

Palgrave Rotarians can help by.
  • Educating ourselves in the nature and scope of
    the problem (guest speakers, visit websites of
    Rotary Clubs already actively involved, share
    what we are doing with other clubs, etc)
  • Financially support existing projects through
    Rotary organizations such as RADAR 7080, RFFA
    (Rotarians for Fighting Aids), Rotary AIDS
    Project (Los Altos Rotary Club), etc
  • Partner with local Rotary Clubs in AIDS
    devastated areas and ask what assistance they
    need
