Check the CMS Calendar
  • A and B days are set in advance at the
beginning of the year and printed on the official
    CMS calendar.
  • If a day is missed because of snow, we will not
    rewrite the A/B schedule.

6
LA/Math Split Block
  • One block every other day will be a split block
    for Language Arts Math.
  • Students will spend 45 minutes in L.A. and then
45 minutes in Math, or vice versa.
  • This allows students to have both subjects every
day 90 minutes of each on one day, and 45

challenges of a high school course!

20
Language Arts
  • Students will take the Grade 6 Reading SOL.
  • Language Arts classes meet every day, (90 minutes
one day, 45 minutes the next).
  • Reading and writing are the main focus in each
    Language Arts class.

21
Reading
  • Reading comprehension is the primary focus of
    reading instruction in sixth grade.
  • Students will read a variety of genres and will
work with fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
  • Literature circles and independent reading are
examples of methods used to differentiate
instruction for diverse learners in the Language
    Arts 6 classroom.

22
Reading
  • Reading strategies are explicitly taught,
modeled, practiced, and applied to enhance
    students comprehension.
  • Examples include
  • Before, During, and After Reading Strategies
  • Think Aloud Strategies (I wonder I predict I
    am confused by )
  • Question Answer Relationships (QAR) Right
There, Think and Search, Author and You, On My
    Own

23
Writing
  • The 6 1 Traits of Writing will be used to
enhance students writing. These traits are
being implemented throughout the curriculum here
    at CMS.
  • Direct writing evaluations will be conducted
during each nine weeks using the Hanover County
