Grade 1 Mathematics
  • (1.2) Number, Operation and Quantitative
reasoning. The student uses pairs of whole
numbers to describe fractional parts of whole
    objects or sets of objects.
  • (B) uses appropriate language to describe part of
a set such as three out of the eight crayons are
    red.

5
Purpose
  • This presentation is designed for first grade
mathematics class. It is intended for the
individual student to view after or during an
initial lesson about the concept of fractions.
Students will participate and interact with the
presentation in order to reinforce the concept
    learned.

6
What are fractions?
  • Fractions are made when we have more than one of
    something.

7
What are fractions?

8
What are fractions?
  • There are FOUR dogs.

9
What are fractions?
  • We make fractions when we compare PART of the
    group with the WHOLE group.

10
What are fractions?
  • THREE dogs are in the corner.

11
What are fractions?
  • So, the way we say this as a fraction is

THREE out of FOUR dogs are in the corner
12
What are fractions?
  • For example, if we have THREE fire trucks

13
What are fractions?
  • For example, if we have THREE fire trucks, and
    you take ONE of them,

14
What are fractions?
  • For example, if we have THREE fire trucks, and
you take ONE of them, you now have ONE out of
    THREE fire trucks.

15
Thats all you need to know for now.
  • Once again.
  • Take the number of objects that you have, and
    thats your FIRST number.
  • I have TWO helmets.

16
Thats all you need to know for now.
  • Once again
  • Take the number of objects total, and thats your
    SECOND number.
  • There are FIVE helmets.

17
Thats all you need to know for now.
  • Once again
  • The way we say this as a fraction is TWO out of
    FIVE helmets.

18
Thats all you need to know for now.
  • Once again
  • The way we say this as a fraction is TWO out of
    FIVE helmets.

-Or- 2 out of 5 helmets
19
Lets put this to some use!

    fire department for a day?
  • LETS GO!!!

  • JJ is out walking his dog, Spot. When he crosses
the street (after looking BOTH ways of course),
    he notices something.. funny.
  • UH OH.

21
Oh no! The empty house across the street is on

22
Call 9-1-1 and get the fire trucks coming, FAST!
23
Call 9-1-1 and get the fire trucks coming, FAST!
24

25
Here comes the Fire Chief!!!
26
Here comes the Fire Chief!
  • The Fire Chief says
  • Help me, JJ. I need your help keeping track of
where my fire trucks and firefighters are at ALL
    times.

27
Here comes the Fire Chief!
  • The Fire Chief says
  • Heres my first problem.

Are you READY?
28
Problem 1Ladder Trucks how many?
  • Chief Says
  • JJ, I have FIVE fire trucks out there right now.
TWO of them have ladders on them.

29
Problem 1Ladder Trucks how many?
  • Chief Says
  • Tell me, JJ, I need to know what fraction of my
    trucks are ladder trucks.

30
Problem 1Lets work this one together.
  • I have TWO ladder trucks.
  • There are FIVE fire trucks.

31
Problem 1Lets work this one together.
  • Thats easy, Chief, TWO out of FIVE fire trucks
    are ladder trucks!

32
Problem 1Lets work this one together.
  • Thats easy, Chief, TWO out of FIVE fire trucks
    are ladder trucks!

33
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • Chief Says
  • Good. Ok-- See that fire truck over there?

34
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • Chief Says
  • That truck came with SIX people. Thats what I
call a full truck. I see ONE person near the
    truck.

35
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • Chief Says
  • Hes safe, but those guys over there are in
    danger if that house falls.

36
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • Chief Says
  • This ones not as easy. Tell me what fraction
of my firefighters are IN DANGER, JJ. I need to
    know.

37
Use this time to work the problem.
  • SIX firefighters
  • ONE is outside, pumping water
  • What fraction of the firefighters in danger by
    the house?
  • Have the answer? Lets see how you did

38
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • We have SIX firefighters. If ONE is still by the
truck, we have to subtract to find how many are
    by the house.

39
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • 6 1 5

40
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • That means there are FIVE firefighters by the
    house.
  • There are SIX firefighters total.

41
Problem 2Where are my firefighters?
  • So, Chief, FIVE out of SIX firefighters are by
    that house.

42
Problem 3Whos left?
  • Chief Says
  • Look, JJ, we did it! The fire is out. And we
even saved most of the house!

43
Problem 3Whos left?
  • Chief Says
  • I just have one more problem for you.

44
Problem 3Whos left?
  • Chief Says
  • Im sending everybody back in service except for
that one truck over there. That means everyone
    gets to go but them.

45
Problem 3Whos left?
  • Chief Says
  • JJ, What fraction of my trucks are left?

46
Use this time to work the problem.
  • We had FIVE fire trucks.
  • All have left but ONE.
  • What fraction of the fire trucks are still here?
  • Have the answer? Lets see how you did

47
Problem 3Whos left?
  • We have ONE fire truck left.

48
Problem 3Whos left?
  • We have ONE fire truck left.
  • There were FIVE fire trucks altogether.

49
Problem 3Whos left?
  • So, Chief, ONE out of FIVE fire trucks are still
    here.

50
