Objectives of the Project
  • To ensure that there are working smoke alarms in
    every home in our community.
  • To make sure all people know how to test and
    maintain the alarm.
  • To ensure all home occupants have and practice an
    escape plan.

Local smoke alarm requirements and placement of
alarms
  • Review the types of housing in all the places
    where you want alarms installed.
  • Show examples of housing in your community.

Be sure to install alarms in the following
places.
  • Install an alarm inside each bedroom and outside
    each separate sleeping area.
  • Install an alarm on each level of the home
    including the basement.

Avoid putting smoke alarms in the following
places
  • Kitchens
  • Garages
  • Bathrooms
  • Most attics, unless the local jurisdiction
    requires them in walk up attics

Installation

Mobile Homes
  • Many older mobile homes built before 1978 have
    little or no insulation. If there is little
    insulation or if you are unsure about insulation,
    install the unit on the walls only.

Equipment Needed
  • Smoke Alarms
  • Safety Ladders
  • Power Drills

Demonstration and Practice
  • Installers practice installing the alarm on
    drywall sheets

Interacting with Resident
  • Address by formal name (Mr. Ms. Mrs. etc.)
  • Identify yourself clearly and be sure to have a
    name badge.
  • Be persuasive but respect persons right to say
    no to service. Provide fire safety information
    and information about the alarm program.

Forms
  • Fill out survey form. It is a step-by-step
    checklist to make sure adequate alarms or
    batteries are installed in the right places.
  • It also provides useful data to the program.
  • Have resident fill out the waiver form.

Testing and Maintenance
  • Show resident how to test the smoke alarm.
    Instruct the resident to test at least monthly.
    Give cleaning instructions.
  • Leave the instructions that comes in the box with
    the resident.

Provide fire safety and escape planning
information.
  • Review all educational handouts
  • with the resident.

Program Plan and Coordination
  • Provide the local plan and instructions for
    reaching the homes in your community.
  • Discuss timeline for installation of alarms in
    the program.
