Starting the College Search

• Now is the time for juniors to start looking at
  colleges
• Attend the college fair on October 6th .
• Search the internet, college handbooks and
  viewbooks
• Explore careers and interests at www.kuder.com
• Visit a college in the spring
• Visit colleges of interest next summer

College Visitations

• Contact the admissions office two weeks in
  advance to set up the appointment
• Contact Mrs. Giesler for a College Leave Form (or
  print off of web site) and submit before the
  visit.
• Student must return a verification form on the
  day following the visit to Mrs. Giesler

What to expect on the visit

• Meet with the office of admissions
• Take a campus tour
• Meet with someone in your planned academic major
• May meet with the office of financial aid
  (private colleges usually)
• Attend a class

Tests for Juniors/Seniors

• PSAT Wed, October 15th in a.m. for Juniors only
• PSAT is free for the student
• SAT Reasoning Test and/or ACT take during the
  spring of the junior year
• SAT/ACT retakes no later than Dec. of senior year
• ISTEP retest for some

• All are offered through OCU
• SAT/ACT not required by OCU
• C or better for eligibility
• Cost 25 per credit hour
• Enrollment for full year courses in January

• What the parent does
• Discuss college options
• Visit schools with your son/daughter
• Help your son/daughter organize materials
• Support them through the process
• What you do NOT do
• Complete the applications for your son/daughter

• Watch the deadlines
• Complete the applications
• Apply to at least one sure college in terms of
  admission standards cost
• Apply online and request online transcript
• - OR
• Turn in completed application to guidance office
  (MUST include addressed, stamped envelope)
• Be neat and use ink if completing a paper
  application

• What the counselor does
• Completes counselor page and transcript online

• Completes the counselor section or page
• Prepares the official transcript
• Mails completed application with transcript to
  the college/university

• Many colleges prefer on-line applications and
  transcripts
• Is counselor form/signature page needed?
• Thanksgiving is recommended deadline for
  submitting applications
• If letter of recommendation is needed, allow two
  (2) weeks

Scholarships Financial Aid

• Not much for juniors to do except maintain grades
  
• Scholarship Financial Aid search starts in the
  senior year
• Discover card scholarship is a national
  scholarship that juniors CAN apply for

• Check scholarships available from colleges
• Check web site for new listings
• Local packet will be given to seniors in January
• FAFSA on the Web Worksheet will be available in
  December with March deadline

General Overview of the Junior Year

• Take the PSAT in October
• Take an SAT and/or ACT in the spring
• Start investigating colleges and careers
• Look at admission requirements
• Maintain or improve grades
• Meet with counselor in the spring for course
  selection for senior year
• Visit colleges next summer

• Individual meetings with all seniors after ISTEP
• Retake SAT/ACT if needed
• Applications for admissions completed 1st
  semester
• FAFSA in January
• Scholarship packets 2nd semester
