John C. Dvorak reports that Dell is fielding
more than 70,000 calls a week related to problems
it blames on spyware. At a guesstimate of 35
per call thats 2,450,000 a week. (Hey, I just
bought a new computer from you and it is SO

Spyware The Next Real ThreatBy Ryan
NaraineDecember 9, 2004
  • Spyware plagues both consumers and corporations,
according to data from analysts. In a recent
survey done by IDC, for instance, enterprise
users labeled spyware as the fourth-biggest
threat to their company's security. They're
reacting to the problem by spending money on
additional security, a trend that will grow
dramatically in the next several years.

spyware writers use "tricklers" to silently
reinstall spyware components after they are
removed. "This makes it even worse than the
mass-mailers. They change the components
frequently and even when you remove registry key
entries, the program simply reinstalls it,
legitimate companies that market P2P
applications such as Kazaa and Grokster have
built spyware acceptance into complicated EULAs
(end-user license agreements). When you install
the P2P program, you agree in advance to accept
all future changes, even the changes made by the
tricklers http//www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,17

Microsoft Adds Spyware Weapon to Arsenal
Microsoft (Nasdaq MSFT) beefed up its security
offerings, buying the anti-spyware company
Giant "Better than nothing is usually the case
with these programs," Friedlander said. "The big
problem with anti-spyware products is they don't
have an enterprise management console. Enterprise
customers need to block spyware and have an
administrative console." http//www.technewsworld

How much of a threat is Spyware?
  • Two out of three IT managers and administrators
recognise spyware as the biggest threat to the
integrity of their networks over the next year.

crippling clutter of spy applications on infected
systems will see many PCs simply grinding to a

Security Holes Increase Windows Client TCO,
October, 2004 It is not unusual for managers
in organizations without patch management or
software distribution tools to report that
operations labor costs have increased by 15 to
20 because of patch deployment and PC
remediation. Companies with PCs that are
considered to be well-managed generally
reported smaller Total Cost of Ownership
increases on smaller base costs, making
manageability an important factor. http//www3.ga

  • SpyWare Combating the New Menace Leads to
Explosive New Market Opportunities, According to
IDCthe need to identify and eradicate these
    parasitic programs will drive Anti-SpyWare
software revenues from 12 million in 2003 to
    305 million in 2008.Key findings from IDC's
study of the SpyWare market include the
    following
  • SpyWare is often bundled with legitimate
programs, allowing it to easily pass through
    firewalls uncontested
  • A recent IDC survey of over 600 organizations
listed SpyWare as the fourth-greatest threat to a
    company's enterprise network security
  • IDC estimates that 67 of all computers have some
    form of SpyWare

What To Do About Spyware -- November 9, 2004
EXECUIVE SUMMARY Spyware on corporate
networks creates IT support headaches and exposes
firms to increased risk of information theft.
Because spyware creators are more likely than
virus writers to be financially motivated, the
spyware problem keeps growing. For example, Dell
estimates that spyware now triggers more than 20
of their support calls. Firms should educate
their users, deploy intrusion prevention,
antispyware and desktop firewall tools, and
enforce sensible browser security settings to
help keep their PCs spyware-free
