Title: Save Energy, Save the planet

1
Save Energy, Save the planet
  • Cut your home utility bills
  • freeing money for other things.
  • Reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

2
World's Oldest Continuously Burning Light Bulb
  • At the Livermore - Pleasanton Fire Department's
Station is a light bulb. But it's not just any
light bulb. This light bulb has been burning
since 1901! It is the longest-burning bulb in the
    world

3
Where and how
  • Change a Light, Change the World
  • We really can "Change the World" with just one
light bulb. The key is that the more people that
take this step, the more we can change the world.
  • Using a electronic bulb, you may save about 15
    euros a year

6
Fight the Light!
  • Don't leave lights on when no one is in the room.
If you are going to be out of the room for more
than five minutes, turn off the light.

7
Fight the Light!
  • Where possible, use compact fluorescent light
bulbs. Those funny-looking bulbs produce the same
amount of light by using 1/4 of the electricity.
Plus, they last for years and years without
    burning out.

8
Don't Leave Things Turned On
  • Turn off the TV when no one is watching it. The
same goes for computers, radios and stereos - if
no one is using it, turn it off..

9
It's a Matter of Degrees!
  • In warm weather, the thermostat at home should be
    set at 25 degrees.
  • When no one is home, set the thermostat at 28
degrees. That way, you'll reduce the need for air
conditioning and you will save energy.
  • If you have ceiling fans or other fans, turn
them on. The blowing air can make you feel 5
degrees cooler, without running the family's air
    conditioner.
  • Fans use a lot less electricity than air
    conditioners!

10
It's a Matter of Degrees!
  • In cold weather, wear warm clothing and have your
thermostat set to 20 degrees or lower during the
    day and evening.
  • When you go to sleep at night, set the
thermostat back to either 18 degrees, or turn it
    off.
  • When you leave home, set the thermostat at 15
degrees or turn it off, too. That way, your
family can save from 5 percent to 20 percent on
    your heating costs.

11
Co2 Polution
  • The Carbon Dioxide behaves like the glass of a
greenhouse. It allows heat from the sun to enter
the earth, but it does nor allow it to leave.
  • Consequently, it is causing the earth to become
    hotter.
  • It is know as the Greenhouse effect

12

  • Do you want to know the quantity of Carbon
Dioxide produced by an avarage Spanish household
    every year?

13
In the Kitchen
  • Don't keep the refrigerator door open any longer
    than you need to.
  • There is a rubber-like seal around the door that
you can test. Just close the door on a Euro note,
and then see how easy it is to pull out. If the
note slides out easily, the door is probably
    leaking cold air from inside.

14
In the Kitchen
  • If you need to warm up or defrost small amounts
of food, use a microwave instead of the stove.
  • Microwave ovens use around 50 percent less energy
    than conventional ovens do.
  • In the summer, using a microwave causes less heat
in the kitchen, which saves money on air
    conditioning.

15
In Shops
  • Shops often use a lot of normal light bulbs to
illuminate their products. They are not energy
saving light bulbs. Normal light bulbs ( in a
shop) produce about 10000 w of energy, but only
1000 w of energy is light. The other 9000 W is
    heat.
  • In summer, the shops then have to use more energy
on air conditioning to remove this extra heat.
  • This is terrible for the planet.

16
In the Kitchen
  • A load of dishes cleaned in a dishwasher uses 37
percent less water than washing dishes by hand!
However, if you fill up one side of the sink with
soapy water and the other side with rinse water -
and if you don't let the faucet run - you'll use
half as much water as a dishwasher does. Doing
the dishes this way can save enough water for a
    five-minute shower!

17
Fans don't make the air cooler!
  • How fans work? They work by blowing away the
envelope of warm air that surrounds your body.
  • As a living creature, you generate heat. As that
heat slowly radiates away from your body, it
creates a pocket of hot air that surrounds you.
It's like you're being insulated by an invisible
bubble of heat. What fans do is to push that hot
surrounding air out of the way.
  • This is why blowing on hot food cools it off.
It's not that your breath is especially cool,
it's that you're blowing the heat off the food.
  • If you're sweating at all then the fan also cools
you by speeding up the evaporation.
  • So now that you know that fans don't make the air
cooler, you can see that there's no advantage to
leaving the fan on when you leave the room. Fans
don't lower the temperature in the room at all.
  • By the way, a typical 48" ceiling fan uses about
    75 watts of electricity
