the use of arms against the British for defense.
  • The writing was written shortly after the battles
    of Lexington and Concord.

Common Sense
!
7
The Document
  • Common sense was one of the first writings that
blamed King George for the acts that were forced
upon the colonies and for their suffering.
  • The famous writing was most likely named Common
Sense because its sayings were based on common
    sense and simple facts.
  • It was an extremely influential writing quite a
few Loyalists were moved by it, also!
  • It was one of the first writings that alerted
colonists about the dispute between the colonies
and Great Britain and called for independence.

8
The Author
  • Thomas Paine was the author of Common Sense.
  • His book was published February 14, 1776
  • He also wrote another very influential writing,
    the American Crisis.

9
The American Crisis
  • The American Crisis was the other famous writing
    written by Thomas Paine.
  • It was published December 23, 1776
  • The writing was so popular that more people read
it then than the amount of people that watch the
    Super Bowl today.
  • It was so influential, that Washington ordered
that it be read to his troops before crossing the
    Delaware.

"These are times that try men's souls..."
10
The Lee Resolution
  • On June 7, 1776 Congress received Richard Henry
    Lees resolution for independence.
  • The document contained three parts
  • A declaration of independence
  • A call to form foreign alliances
  • A plan for confederation
  • Inspired by the resolution, Congress appointed
three committees one to draft a declaration,
one to call to form a foreign alliance, and one
to write a plan for confederation.
  • The first part (the declaration) was approved on
    July 2, 1776.

11
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
  • We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
    all men are created equal
  • It set forth the principle that the Lee
Resolution had suggested two days earlier.
  • Thomas Jefferson was the author of the document.
  • It was approved by the Second Continental
    Congress July 4, 1776.
  • This document stated that the United States of
America was now an independent country, separate
    from Britain.

Thomas Jefferson
12
What if Thomas Jefferson had been caught writing
the Declaration of Independence?
  • He would have been killed.

What If ?
13
"Give me liberty...
or
give me death!!"
14
This was a speech written by Patrick Henry that
was made to make the Patriots unafraid of death.
They tell us, Sir, that we are weakunable to
cope with so formidable an adversary, but when
shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week,
or the next year? Will it be when we are totally
disarmed, and when a British guard shall be
stationed in every house? Shall we gather by
lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the
delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall
have bound us hand and foot?
15
Which Would You Choose?

Or

Treaty of Paris
  • The treaty was made on September 3, 1783
  • It was made two years after the Revolutionary
    War.

rights, and provided fair treatment to those who
remained loyal to Britain during the war.

Loyalist Writings
  • Many people only think of documents written by
Patriots when they think of political writings of
    the Revolutionary War.
  • Two documents written by Loyalists were
  • The Vicar of Bray
  • The World Turned Upside Down
  • These documents mainly focused on how the unruly
child (America) should obey its mother (Britain).

18
Articles of Confederation
  • It was drafted by the Continental Congress
  • Essentially, the Articles of Confederation was a
    pre-Constitution.
