  and art dating from 2700 B.C. to about 270 B.C.
• The Seven Wonders, a collection by Greeks and
  Romans
• Results of archaeologists readings of ancient
  tales and literary works

The Statue of Zeus

• Located on the west coast of modern Greece.
• Built in 450 B.C.
• Rose to a height of a modern four-story building.
• Created to honor the god of nature.

Throne covered in jewels. Sandals and robe made
of gold. Olive ring worn on head. Hands held a
figure of victory and scepter with eagle on it.

The Temple of Artemis

• Built in honor of the Greek goddess of hunting,
  fertility, and wild nature Artemis (Diana)
• Location is Selcuk,Turkey
• Artifacts as far as Persia (Iran) and India
• 127 columns

The Colossus of Rhodes

• Located in the city of Rhodes, a Greek island.
• Built around 304 B.C. in honor of Apollo.
• Took over 12 years to build from 15 tons of
  bronze and metal.
• Stands over 100 feet tall, nearly as tall as the
  Statue of Liberty.
• Destroyed by an earthquake in 226 B.C.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria

• Built on the island of Pharos around 290 B.C.
• Built after the death of Alexander the Great, who
  discovered the city of Alexandria.
• Destroyed in 1480 by a sultan and later glass
  marbles became part of a defense fort.

The Pyramids of Egypt
The Egyptian Pyramid of Giza was built in 450
B.C. It took 20 years to build with 100,000
slaves working on it. Holds 2,300,000 blocks of
stone, weighing 2 ½ tons each. It is the only
ancient wonder still standing today. Once it
was believed to be Khufus tomb, but now
Archaeologists think it might be an astronomical
observatory

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

• There is archeological evidence of the garden
  found in Iraq.
• These gardens was unusual because it was in the
  middle of the desert.
• Nebuchadnezzar and his men probably used a chain
  pump to water the plants.
• These gardens were 22 feet thick!
• These Gardens do not exist anymore.

The Mauseleum of Halicarnassus

• Located in Bodrum, Caria, southwest Turkey off
  Aegean Sea
• Built in 350 B.C
• A tomb for King Mausollos
• A series of earthquakes crushed it, and it no
  longer remains. Thorough excavation, the British
  found some remains of it.

Credits

• The third grade students worked together to
  research, insert pictures, and type the data they
  discovered on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient
  World. It was the culminating activity to their
  unit of study on Symbols and how they relate to
  man in the past, present, and future.
