Permission Slip

• Dear Parents/Guardians,
• On October 25, 2007 Mr. Murphys 2nd grade
  class will be going on a field trip to Gull
  Meadow farms in Richland. The class will be
  taking what we have learned in the classroom and
  using it hands on in the real world.
• The Bus will be leaving Havel Elementary at
  1030a.m. and will be returning to the school at
  around 200p.m. There is no need for any special
  procedures the students will be home at their
  normal time.
• Admission to the Orchard is FREE. The only
  thing that the students will need is to bring a
  bag lunch. If you are unable to provide a bag
  lunch for your child please email me and
  arrangements will be made
• We do need some chaperones so it you would like
  to please check the line at the bottom of the
  page.

  pumpkins

• Sample fresh cider
• See many different uses for pumpkins
• Go though the corn maze

Ideas for the Classroom

• There are many more uses for pumpkins then you
  may have thought. Have students think of as many
  as possible.
• Have students study the leaves that have fallen
  to the ground. Have they explain why they think
  they have changed color.
• Have students write why they think families
  crave pumpkins and put them on their porches.

What to plan for

• Have the students work with a field trip buddy.
• Plan restroom breaks if possible at the Orchard.
• Try and contact as many parents/guardians as
  possible by phone for them to be chaperones.
• Spend more time working on leaves in the
  classroom before going on the trip.
• Have students write out field trip rules.

Michigan Benchmarks

• I.1.E.1 Generate questions about the world
  based on observations. The students will question
  why are the leaves changing colors.
• II.1.E.1- Develop an awareness of the need for
  evidence in making decisions scientifically. The
  students will try and prove why their idea for
  why the leaves change color is correct.
• III.2.E.5- Explain functions of selected seed
  plant part. The life cycle of an apple tree.
