7
What is happening in these pictures?
8
Why are they holding the American flag?
9
Do you know what the Pledge of Allegiance really
means?
  • I pledge allegiance
  • I promise to be loyal
  • to the flag of the United States of America,
  • to the flag of the United States of America,
  • and to the Republic
  • and I promise to be loyal to the country and type
of government that the flag stands for
  • for which it stands,

10
Do you know what the Pledge of Allegiance really
means?
  • one nation
  • a single country
  • under God,
  • a country that obeys and honors a Supreme Being,
  • indivisible,
  • a country that will never be divided
  • with liberty, and justice, for all.
  • and a country where there is freedom and fairness
    for everyone.

11
Think about it!
  • The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892, 400
    years after Christopher Columbusdiscovered
America, and 30 years after the nation nearly
tore itself in two during the Civil War.

12
Think about it!
  • What Francis Bellamy was trying to say was that
we can never let such things happen again! That
    we are one country, forever.

13
Think about it!
  • Bellamy also knew that Americas constitution
promised freedom and fairness for all people, but
that too many people were still not being treated
    fairly.

14
Think about it!
  • Thats why Bellamy included the words "with
liberty and justice for all." He wanted Americans
to help their country live up to its promises.

15
Think about it!
  • Think about these words the next time you pledge
    allegiance to the flag.
  • Remember that you are promising to be loyal to
the ideas that make America a special place.
  • And that means helping your country this
country where we are all immigrants -- to be its
    very best.
