Why Primary School?
It is important to address this issue from late
primary school onwards because children are aware
of Volatile Substance Abuse from a young age.
The youngest death was aged just 7 years old.
Children need to have information to help protect
them through the major social changes and
exposure to new risks that occur as they transfer
to secondary school.
The lack of available resources mean that primary
schools have the choice of ignoring the issue,
addressing the issue blind or using resources
that are not appropriate for the age group.

What is VSA?
Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA) is the deliberate
inhalation of the chemicals found in everyday
products such as deodorant, hairspray and
cigarette lighter refills. The range of products
which contain solvents and volatile chemicals is
extensive and widely available in household
products or industrial commodities.
On average there is one death a week from VSA.
Since 1971 when records began, it has claimed
over 2,000 lives, with just two thirds of these
deaths under the age of 19 the most common age
being 16.
The Facts
  • VSA kills more young people than illegal drugs
  • 1 in 10 children have sniffed by the age of 13
    (Dept. of Health survey)
  • The biggest danger from misusing these products
    is INSTANT DEATH
