3
  • Leadership is authentic self-expression that adds
value to your self and others.
  • (Kevin Cashman)
  • Authenticity is the degree to which one is true
to ones own personality, spirit, or character
    despite the pressures.

4
  • Authentic Leadership is about the substance of
leadership and stands independently of leadership
style. Therefore, a leader can be
  • transformational, transactional, directive or
    participative
  • and be defined as an authentic leader.

5
  • Authentic leaders have a capacity to build
confidence, hope, optimism and resilience within
    others.

6
Authentic Leaders we know
  • Peter Blake
  • Mother Theresa
  • Kate Sheppard
  • Sir Edmund Hillary
  • ?

7
  • Who are the authentic leaders in your world?
What qualities identify them as authentic in your
    eyes?

8
  • It will be no surprise that researchers have
unearthed evidence that authentic leaders create
a positive effect on organisational behaviour.
  • Lester Levy

9
  • How well do you know YOURSELF?

10
  • Why did you become a teacher?
  • What would you like your legacy as a teacher to
    be?
  • How do you remain true to your teacher core in
your day-to-day work as a school leader?

11
  • Leadership without perspective and point of
view isnt leadership - and of course it must be
your own perspective, you own point of view. It
must be authentic, and if it is, it will be
    original, because you are original.
  • Professor Warren Bennis - The Leadership
    Institute. Marshall School of Business,
    University of Southern California.

12
  • Authentic Leadership is achieved by focusing on
building peoples strengths rather than what is
wrong with people and their weaknesses.
  • George W.W. (2003) Authentic Leadership
Rediscovering the secrets to creating lasting
    value. San Francisco.

13
  • Authentic leadership aims to incorporate the
    theories of positive leadership, transformational
    leadership and moral/ethical leadership.
  • Lester Levy - Authentic Leadership Survey
    Results (2007).

14
  • What is Authenticity?

15
  • Owning ones own personal experiences (values,
thoughts, emotions and beliefs) and acting in
accordance with ones true self (expressing what
you really think and believe and behaving
    accordingly).
  • Gardner, Avolio, Luthans, May,Walumbwa (2005).
Can you see the real me? The Leadership
    Quarterly, 16 (3).

16
  • How well do you know YOURSELF?

17
  • What do you stand for as a leader?
  • Do the staff and students in your school know
    what you stand for?
  • How might they know?

18
One of the more widely known global authentic
leaders, Martin Luther King stated
  • On some positions, cowardice asks the question
is it safe? Expediency asks the questions, is
it politic? Vanity asks the question is it
popular? But conscience asks the question is
it the right thing to do?

19
Kiwi Leadership
  • Manaakitanga leading with moral purpose.
  • Ako Being a learner, building collaborative
  • learning and teaching relationships in the

20
Kiwi Leadership for PrincipalsACTIVITY
  • Align the characteristics of Authentic Leaders
with the characteristics of Kiwi Leadership for
    Principals

Align the characteristics of Authentic
Leadership with the Qualities of Kiwi Leadership.
21
REFLECTION
  • Which Kiwi Leadership qualities do you already
    have?
  • To which qualities do you aspire?

22
  • John Edwards one workshop is not learning, until
you expand your PPK (personal practical
    knowledge) through doing something yourself,
    designing something with the information,
trying it, evaluating it and redesigning on the
basis of what you have found

23
Silence
  • Real communication (with yourself) can take place
    only when there is silence.
  • But there is also more in this silence that goes
beyond opening the heart and seeing from inside
  • In that special silence you can hear, or see, or
get a sense of something that wants to happen
that you wouldnt have been aware of otherwise.
  • It is an active listening, not a passive silence.
  • Peter Senge in Presence Human purpose and the
    field of the future (2004).

24
Personal Reflection
  • If you could improve one aspect of the leadership
that you have experienced at work what would it
    be?
  • What do you think is the most important
leadership challenge facing your school at this
    point in time?

25
  • What actions are you going to take in the next
    week, month, year to increase
  • your capacity as an Authentic Leader?

26
  • The only real training for leadership is
    leadership.
  • Anthony Jay

27
  • Too many people separate the act of leadership
from the leader. They see leadership as
something that they do - rather than who they
are. People who understand who they arehave a
    more powerful voice.
  • Kevin Cashman

28
  • Authentic Leadership is like beauty it is hard
to define, but you know it when you see it.
  • Warren Bennis
