RESIDENCY
  • Only J-1 or HB-1
  • J-1 sponsored by ECFMG, accepted by most (if not
    all) programs
  • HB-1 sponsored by (very few!) programs ,
    therefore limited number of positions!

J-1
  • Need letter of need from Canadian government
    all details when you match
  • Must return to country of origin for a minimum of
    2 years
  • OR get waiver (hard to get)
  • OR may agree to work in underprivileged area for
    min 3 years
  • Cannot change for other visas!!!

HB-1
  • Not sponsored by many programs
  • Must take (and pass) USMLE Step 3
  • Option only if you take a year off then no
    worries about visa waivers

Im no lawyer
  • Residency programs have their personal
    immigration lawyers, so its not all that simple!
  • Specific questions should be directed to the
    experts!

  • the match for 2007 for entry level postgraduate
    positions in all 17 Canadian medical schools will
    be offered in two iterations. The first iteration
    will include all graduating students and
    graduates from Canada, the US, and abroad who
    meet the eligibility criteria of CaRMS. The
    second iteration is offered for positions and
    applicants who were not matched in the first and
    also includes applicants who have had previous
    North American postgraduate training who wish to
    apply for an R-1 position in Canada.

  • Ensure reading the provincial criteria and
    specific program descriptions when applying since
    eligibility for a postgraduate training program
    is ultimately determined by each Canadian medical
    school.

MCCEE

  • 2008-computer based- shorter, more often (from 3
    to 6 times a year) and in more locations.
  • 2007- 300 Q in two 3 ½ hour sessions
  • JAN 11, MAY 3, SEPT 6 2007. Need to apply 4
    months before.
  • Needs to be taken NO MORE than 9 months before
    your graduation!!!!
  • MCCEE needed in order to get visa in the States
    for residency (so even if you plan to go to the
    states for residency STILL need to write it!!)

    must!!) Kaplan for step 2? Depends on you.

  • If you know people from canadian schools get some
