Title: Solar System Notes

1
Solar System Notes
2
Formation
  • Began as a cloud of dust mixed with hydrogen and
    other gases.
  • During a nuclear fusion reaction the nuclei of
hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium atoms.
  • The sun was born.
  • The rest of the matter cooled and clumped
together to form solid bodies now known as
    planets.

3
Astronomical Units
  • Distances inside the solar system are measured by
    AU.
  • 1 AU is the average distance between the Sun and
    the Earth

4
Force and Motion
  • Solar system is made up of the Sun, planets, and
millions of other smaller bodies that travel in
    orbit around the Sun.
  • Without the force of the Suns gravity, the
planets will travel off into space in a straight
    line.
  • The motion of the planet in its orbit around the
sun is called revolution. It is one year on that
    planet.

5
  • The time it takes for a planet to spin on its
axis is called its period of rotation and it is
    one day on that planet.
  • The closer the two objects are, and the larger
the masses, the greater the force of gravity
    between them.
  • Objects weigh more on planets with larger masses.

6
Inner Planets
  • Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars
  • Closest to the Sun
  • Rocky, Solid bodies
  • Smaller and less massive

7
Outer Planets
  • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
  • More gaseous and Icy
  • Much larger and more massive
  • Less dense
  • Tend to have more natural satellites or moons

8
Other Objects
  • Comets travel in orbits around the sun. While
near the sun, solar energy causes the surface to
vaporize and glow forming a tail behind it.
  • Located between Mars and Jupiter is a belt of
rock fragments called asteroids. They are
believed to be remains of a shattered planet.

9
  • Meteoroids are solid pieces of rock and metal
that orbits the Sun. Most dont reach the Earths
surface without burning up first. If they do hit
the earth, they are called meteorites and may
    create a crater.
