    gloving, needle stick injuries, equipment
    disposal
  • Proper vaccine handling and preparation
  • Equipment selection syringe, needle, filling
    the syringe, reconstitution, pre-filling
    syringes, labeling

  • Route Subcutaneous (subq)
  • Sites back of arm between shoulder and elbow
    (any age) thigh (may use for infants)
  • Needle gauge length 5/8-inch, 23 to 25-gauge
  • Technique Pinch up fatty tissue, insert needle
    at 45 angle

  • Route Intramuscular injection (IM)
  • Site Vastus lateralis (thigh) or deltoid
  • Needle gauge length 22- to 25-gauge, 1-inch
    to 1 ½-inch
  • Technique Spread skin taut between thumb or
    forefinger to isolate muscle insert needle at
    90 angle

  • Standardizing location of injections reduces
    error and increases efficiency
  • No research data documented to support the need
    for aspiration

GENERAL RULE
  • No contraindication to simultaneous
    administration of vaccines.
  • In same site, separate by 1-2 inches
  • Use less reactive vaccines in same site
  • Subq vaccine can go in same limb
  • (Preferred) 2 vaccines in one muscle site
