Brief Overview

  • Problem/Objective
  • Design Concepts
  • Concept Selection/Design Matrix

3
Introduction Background
  • September 11, 2001 Pentagon Attack

4
Problem
  • Currently, only one-directional mechanical flow
valves are available on the market

5
Objective
  • Design and prototype a bi-directional flow
    control valve

6
Design A Door Hinge Valve
7
Design A Door Hinge Valve
8
Design A Door Hinge Valve
  • Circular plate connected to hook acts as valve
  • Spring force balances pressure force while
    valve maintains normal operations
  • If tube breaks, the force on the hook becomes
greater than the spring force causing the valve
    to close

9
Design B Hour Glass Stopper
10
Design B Hour Glass Stopper
11
Design B Hour Glass Stopper
  • Stopper suspended by six springs, three on each
side, arranged in an equilateral triangle
  • Water flow exerts pressure on stopper area
  • In the event of a sudden pressure difference,
the force on one side will close the valve by
    overcoming the spring force

12
Design C Tension Springs
13
Design C Tension Springs
14
Design C Tension Springs
  • Two springs active clapper-type device on each
    end of the valve
  • Springs are extended by an pressure difference
    to close off the valve
  • When the pressure returns to normal the spring
    retracts, opening the valve

Design E Uniaxial Plate Valve
19
Design E Uniaxial Plate Valve
  • The stopper is mounted on an axial bar that is
attached to the sides of the valve by
    perpendicular bars
  • The axial bar has springs on each side to hold
the stopper in an equilibrium position
  • Functions in a similar manner to the Hour Glass
    Stopper
