  • Clergies were very influential in medieval
    European culture and politics. For many people in
    the European Middle Ages, life revolved around
    the church
  • Society-everything took place at the church,
    Pilgrims visited religious places.
  • Politics-Church officials often became
    political advisors to local rulers

Magna Carta?
  • In 1215 a group of English nobles decided to
    force the king to respect their rights . They
    made King John approve a document listing the
    rights the King could not ignore. This document
    was called the Magna Carta or Great Charter.

  • This was an important step in establishing
    democractic principles in Europe
  • The king would have to obey the laws as well

  • Faced war with financial troubles , the kings
    turned to nobles for advice and money. Before
    long, the council turned to the parliament

  • Nobles demanded the agreement to the king so
    other people will have some rights.

  • Soon, the kings turned to a council of nobles for
    money .Before long, the council developed into
    Parliament , the lawmaking body that still
    governs today.

  • The Hundred Years War was a long conflict between
    the French and the English
  • French King dies with no heirs
  • Two men claim throne
  • English take the lead
  • Joan of Arc rallied the French

  • French won the war
  • In England the war helped increase the Power of
    the Parliament because the King needed the
    Parliaments approval to raise money to pay for
    the war
  • French lost Joan
  • Democracy in France will have to wait

  • During the Hundred Years war , a Deadly plague
    swept through Europe between 1374 and 1351
  • The Plague started in Asia , Traders unknowingly
    brought rats carrying disease to the
    Mediterranean ports
  • From there it quickly swept through Europe

Effect on Manor Life and Feudalism?
  • The Black Death was though to have killed 25
    million people
  • The old Manor system , already weakened by the
    growth of cities , collapsed
  • Plague survivors found their skills in demand and
    charged more for their labor
