Title: The Crescent City Bridge

1
The Crescent City Bridge
  • Gabrielle Danos

2
Location
  • This bridge is a connector between the West
    Bank and the East Bank.
  • It is in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • West Bank refers to the west side of the
Mississippi River and East Bank refers to the
    east side of the river.

3
History
  • The first side was built in 1954 and opened in
    1958.
  • The second was built in 1981,and finished by
    1988.
  • Both of the sides were called the Greater New
    Orleans Bridge (12)
  • A public contest in 1989 help the Louisiana
legislature change the bridges names to the
    Crescent City Connection Bridges.

4
The CCCD
  • CCCD means Crescent City Connection Division
  • The mission of the CCCD is to maintain and
operate the bridge by issuing workers to take
tolls, sell toll tags, and hire and pay the
    Bridge Police.

5
What is the Bridge Police??
  • The bridge police is a special force of police
officers who hand out traffic tickets in the
event of speeding, drunk driving, (etc.)
  • They are called the bridge police because they do
not work for Orleans Parish or Jefferson Parish
they dont work for the east or west bank.

6
The Effect of Hurricane Katrina
  • On August 26, 2005 toll collections were stopped
to let the evacuees get out in time.
  • After the storm, Orleans Parish was severely
flooded, and the only way to escape it was the
    Crescent City Connection.
  • The following weeks, only emergency vehicles were
    allowed to pass through.
  • In September, the bridge opened up again, but due
to the threat of Hurricane Rita, the city shut
    down the bridge.

7
Tolls
  • From October 1, 1994 through December 31, 2012,
tolls will be collected at a rate of 0.20 per
axle for toll tag users, and 0.50 per axle for
    cash users.
  • Prior to Hurricane Katrina, annual toll
    collections averaged 20 million.
  • The Crescent City Connection became the first
bridge to use computerized tolls. (Toll Tags.)
