SCHOOL KEYS WELCOMES THE MSA VALIDATION TEAM!
APRIL 2011
Volume 5, Issue 8
THE FUTURE BEGINS AFTER ZERO HOUR
  • By Amanda Soto Jim Soto
  •   Ten years ago, when FFBS received the MSA's
accreditation, a new age flourished in our
institution. Middle school, the science lab, the
library, and also the computer lab were all
created. The MSA validation process changed us
forever. Now, ten years later, Zero hour is upon
us as a new validation team arrives to our shores
by 4/11/11. We have no doubt that this year we
will receive the accreditation as well. And not
only will it maintain the institution's status of
excellence, but it will also push us towards a
    new age of technical renovation.
  • A vital component of this will be the new
'smart classrooms' which would need extra
    internet capacity, more electrical

capacity, and several antecedent processes before
its implantation. It's scheduled to be ready by
August 2012.  Both principals, Silvia Rodríguez
Marin and Luis Rodríguez, in collaboration with
the MSA Steering Committee, have prepared a work
plan for the next 7 years. The plan will consist
of 5 smart classrooms in the middle school area,
renovations toward the Math and Spanish programs,
increment the amount of computers available, and
also the renovation of the school's
infrastructure as part of the smart classrooms'
preparation process. And what after this? Did we
mention FFBHS? Yes, high school.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  •  By Yashira Rios
  • (This is the second of a series of articles.)
  • II
  • Who Gets SAD?
  • SAD can affect adults, teens, and children. It's
estimated that about 6 in every 100 people (6)
    experience SAD.
  • The number of people with SAD varies from region
to region. One study of SAD in the United States
found the rates of SAD were seven times higher
among people in New Hampshire than in Florida,
suggesting that the farther people live from the
equator, the more likely they are to develop SAD.
  • Interestingly, when people who get SAD travel to
areas far south of the equator that have longer
daylight hours during winter months, they do not
get their seasonal symptoms. This supports the
theory that SAD is related to light exposure.
  • Most people don't get seasonal depression (SAD),
even if they live in areas where days are shorter
during winter months. Experts don't fully
understand why certain people are more likely to
experience SAD than others. It may be that some
    people are more sensitive than

others to variations in light, and therefore may
experience more dramatic shifts in hormone
production, depending on their exposure to light.
Like other forms of depression, females are
about four times more likely than males to
develop SAD. People with relatives who have
experienced depression are also more likely to
develop it. Individual biology, brain chemistry,
family history, environment, and life experiences
may also make certain individuals more prone to
SAD and other forms of depression. Researchers
are continuing to investigate what leads to SAD,
as well as why some people are more likely than
others to experience it. How Is SAD Diagnosed
and Treated? Doctors and mental health
professionals make a diagnosis of SAD after a
careful evaluation. A medical checkup is also
important to make sure that symptoms aren't due
to a medical condition that needs treatment.
Tiredness, fatigue, and low energy could be a
sign of another medical condition such as
hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia, or mononucleosis.
Other medical conditions can cause appetite
changes, sleep changes, or extreme fatigue.
  • English Week 2011
  • por Amanda Soto
  •
  • English Week is known for its book sales,
puppet shows, Spelling Bee tournament, and more
    importantly, the Short Film Festival.
Unfortunately, this year's event will be shorter
than usual. Why, you ask. Well, since the MSA's
visit coincides with the event, very little time
was left to accommodate a few activities such as
the Film Festival, which is set for Thursday,
    April 14 at 730 pm.
  • This year, unfortunately, there will be no book
sale due to scheduling problems. The Travelling
Puppet Show will remain as usual. This year, as
we all know, we will have special visitors and we
hope they leave with great impression about
    these special events.We can't wait...

April Fools' DayBy Ambar Morales  April
Fools' Day is celebrated in the Western world on
April 1st of every year. Sometimes referred to as
All Fools' Day, April 1st is not a legal holiday,
but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day
which tolerates practical jokes and general
foolishness. The day is marked by the commission
of good humored or funny jokes, hoaxes, and other
practical jokes of varying sophistication on
friends, family members, work associates,
etc.Traditionally, in some countries such as the
UK, Australia, and South Africa, the jokes only
last until noon, and someone who plays a trick
after noon is called an "April Fool". It is for
this reason that newspapers in the U.K. that run
a front page April fool only do so on the first
(morning) edition. Elsewhere, the jokes last all
day.

  • Easter
  • By Wilmary Hernández
  • Easter is the central feast in the Christian
liturgical year. According to the Canonical
gospels, Jesus rose from the dead on the third
day after his crucifixion. Some Christians
celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or
Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday and
three days after Maundy Thursday. The chronology
of His death and resurrection is variously
interpreted to be between AD 26 and 36,
traditionally 33. Easter also refers to the
season of the church year called Eastertide or
the Easter Season. Traditionally the Easter
Season lasted for the forty days from Easter Day
until Ascension Day. The first week of the Easter
Season is known as Easter Week or the Octave of
Easter. The week from Palm Sunday to Easter is
known as Holy Week. Easter also marks the end of
Lent, a season of fasting, prayer, and penance.
  • Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not
fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The
First Council of Nicaea (325) established the
date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full
moon following the northern hemisphere's vernal
    equinox. Ecclesiastically, the equinox is
reckoned to be on the March 21st (even though the
equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on March
20th in most years), and the "Full Moon" is not
necessarily the astronomically correct date. The
date of Easter therefore varies between the March
22nd and the April 25th. Eastern Christianity
bases its calculations on the Julian Calendar
whose March 21st corresponds, during the 21st
century, to the 3rd of April in the Gregorian
Calendar, in which calendar their celebration of
Easter therefore varies between the April 4th and
    May 8th.
  • Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much
of its symbolism, as well as by its position in
the calendar. In most European languages the
feast called Easter in English is termed by the
words for passover in those languages and in the
older English versions of the Bible the term
Easter was the term used to translate passover.
  • Secular customs, such as the Easter Bunny and
Easter egg hunts, have become part of the
holiday's modern celebrations and are often
observed by Christians and non-Christians alike.
There are also some Christian denominations who
    do not celebrate Easter.

Look at What I Can Do
By Leo Cardona
Our student body is truly talented. Students
such as Jean Sebastian Sullivan from Mrs. Zs
5-1 stand out as living examples. During a
creative writing project Jean wrote a story which
he titled GOOD vs. BAD. It so blew away his
teachers mind that she send it to our
newsletter for publication. Weve got a copy! Now
you can enjoy this remarkable students work.
Nitza Pérez is the new Middle School Spanish
teacher. She received her Bachelors degree in
Secondary Spanish Education at the Universidad
Interamericana, Aguadilla campus. Her favorite
hobbies include reading and watching movies and
TV sitcoms.   All she did to get her job here
was to turn in her application to the directors
and they called in January to begin working in
February. She says that the school has an
excellent faculty and a very good administration.
She feels very supported by all of them. She says
that they listen to her ideas and that theyre
very respectful.   As of a message to the
students, she said, Respect your teachers and
your peers. Also, learn to love to learn. What
an upbeat and respectful message, right? We are
glad to welcome Mrs.Pérez to our schools.
Welcome to Froebel!
Earth Day By Gabriela Gomez Earth Day is
intended to inspire awareness and appreciation
for the Earth's natural environment. It was
founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson
as an environmental teach-in first held on April
22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused
on the United States, an organization launched by
Denis Hayes, who was the original national
coordinator in 1970, took it international in
1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth
Day is now coordinated globally and is celebrated
in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous
communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week
of activities focused on environmental issues. In
2009, the United Nations designated April 22
International Mother Earth Day.

The Geeks Nest...
Talent Show 2011 By Alanis Morales
Get ready for Froebels 2011 Student
Talent Show on April 8, 2011 at 700 pm. This
year would be Mrs. Janet Riveras second time
being in charge of the activity because of her
creativity and love for music. For this
iteration, Mrs. Rivera proposed a new concept in
which the students wanting to participate must
audition to be able to perform in the Talent
Show. The auditions were held on March 31,
2011. This year we will have dancing, singing,
and musical instruments for the first time.
However, only the best competitors will be able
to participate. We will also have students art
exhibition. Dont forget to come! It would be one
of the best Talent Shows ever seen at Froebel
Bilingual School!

    planeando su próximo fashion show.

dreams. In the moving aftermath of this
headline-making story, Bethany fights to recover
and grapples with the future. Strengthened by the
love of her parents she refuses to give in or
give up, and begins a bold return to the water.
Still, the questions keep hammering her Why did
