Mateo 2133 - 43

Matthew 2133 - 43
33 Jesus said to the chief priests and the
elders of the people Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it,
and built a tower. Then he leased it to
tenants and went on a journey.
34 When vintage time drew near, he sent his
servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.
7
35 But the tenants seized the servants and one
they beat, another they killed, and a third
they stoned.
36 Again he sent other servants, more numerous
than the first ones, but they treated them in
the same way.
37 Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking,
They will respect my son.
38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said
to one another, This is the heir. Come, let
us kill him and acquire his inheritance.
8
39 They seized him, threw him out of the
vineyard, and killed him.
40 What will the owner of the vineyard do to
those tenants when he comes?
41 They answered him, He will put those
wretched men to a wretched death and lease his
vineyard to other tenants who will give him the
produce at the proper times.
42 Jesus said to them, Did you never read in
the scriptures The stone that the builders
rejected has become the cornerstone by the
Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in
our eyes ?
9
43 Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of
God will be taken away from you and given to
a people that will produce its fruit.

Reflections on Matthew 2133
- 43 Reflexiones en Mateo
2133 - 43 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J.
Oct. 2, 2011

This is the 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time. In
order to appreciate the Gospel, we will make a
few reflections that come to mind upon reading
the first reading of the Mass (Isaiah 51-7). In
song the prophet speaks about how God in his
love for his people did all he could for his
vine, yet it yielded wild grapes.
12
13
In the Gospel Jesus recalled the history of
Israel and then foretold how he, the Son of God,
was to be killed. He is the cornerstone of the
Kingdom of God, which will be given to a people
that produces fruit.
14
God planted the faith in Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob, multiplying them like the stars of heaven
and the sand on the seashore. He took them
out of slavery in Egypt with a powerful hand.
He handed them the holy land, full of milk and
honey, so that they would bring forth fruits of
a life of holiness, by keeping the commandments.
15
16
He sent them prophets to pick up the fruit. But
instead of welcoming them, they mistreated
them, and they killed them. They killed Isaiah,
stoned Jeremiah, persecuted Elijah, and
beheaded John the Baptist. God expected the
vine to give good grapes, but the vineyard gave
wild grapes. They committed iniquities, went
into idolatry, and were unfaithful (Epiphanius
the Latin Interpretation of the Gospels, 31).
17
Mataron a Isaías, apedrearon
a Jeremías, persiguieron a Elías, y
uvas agrias. Cometieron iniquidades, se
entregaron a la idolatría, y así fueron
infieles (Epifanio el Latino Interpretación de
Los Evangelios, 31).
18
The opposite happened. Instead of running to
Him to ask forgiveness, they persisted in their
sins. They proceeded to add even more to
their wickedness and to their previous sins.
Jesus knew this and he said Fill up, then,
the measure of your forefathers (Matthew
2332).
19
Lo contrario sucedió. En vez de correr hacia Él
a pedir perdón, persistieron en sus pecados.
Procedieron hasta añadir más maldades a sus
pecados anteriores. Jesús lo supo y les dijo
Llenen, entonces, la medida de sus padres
(Mateo 2332).
20
In the gospel of Matthew 2133-43 Jesus directs
himself to the high priests and elders of the
people. They were the educated leaders of the
people. They knew the scriptures well,
including the Book of Isaiah. Chrysostom (The
Gospel of Matthew 681) says God expected them
to repent and to condemn themselves for the
things they had done to the other prophets before
sending his Son. He hoped they would set aside
their anger and reverence Jesus when he
came. That is why he said they will respect
him (Matthew 2137).
21
22
Instead of receiving him with respect, they cast
him out of the vineyard (Jerusalem) and killed
him. They crucified him saying Crucify him,
crucify him. When Jesus asks them When
the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do
to those tenants? (Matthew 2140) They answered
He will put those wretches to a miserable
death, and let out the vineyard to other
tenants who will give him the fruits in their
season. They condemn themselves by their own
words.
23
vuelva? respondieron Dará muerte terrible a
tiempo. Se condenan a sí mismos con sus
propias palabras.
24
Jesus then cited the scriptures The very stone
which the builders rejected has become the head
of the corner (Matthew 2142). The anonymous
author of the Incomplete Work on Matthew, Homily
40, says there are two reasons why Christ is
called a stone. First, it is because his
foundation is solid and no one who stands upon
him will fall victim to deceitful charms or be
moved by the storms of persecution.
25
26
Second, Christ is called a stone because in him
is the ultimate destruction of the wicked, for
just as everything which collides with a stone is
shattered while the stone remains intact, so
also everyone who opposes the Christian faith
will himself be ruined, but Christianity will
remain untouched.
27
Cristiandad quedara intacta.
28
What if you are one who desires to bring forth
the fruit that God expects of you? St. Paul in
the reading for today (Philippians 4 8-9),
suggests some applications Whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever
is gracious, if there is any excellence, if
there is anything worthy of praise, think about
these things. What you have learned and
received and heard and seen in me, do and
the God of peace will be with you.
29
30
In conclusion, Jesus said I am the vine, you
are the branches. The Father prunes the vine so
that it will bring forth much fruit. Without
me, you can do nothing (John 155). It is
important that we bring forth fruits worthy of
repentance. In prayer the Lord will bring to
mind what it is we are to do. Let us pray that
his Kingdom come. Amen!
31
Oremos
que venga su Reino. Amen!
32
Be like me !
Sed Como yo !
True, honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious,
excellent, worthy of praise. What you have
learned received heard seen in me,
you do too !
Verdadero, honorable, justo, puro, amoroso,
lleno de gracia, excelente, y digno de
alabanza .
