Ways to install programs on your computer

• 1 Run from CD
• insert CD and autoplay
• 2 Run from Hard Drive
• insert CD and copy file to Hard drive, then run
• 3 Download to Hard Drive
• download file from internet and then run
• 4 Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel
• it will install the program for you

Run from CD

• must have CD to run program
• may or may not ask you to install
• Install
• Part of the program is on CD part on your hard
  drive
• Runs faster
• Not Install
• All of the program is on the CD
• Runs Slower

• Procedure
• Insert CD
• Wait for CD to autoplay
• Choose install when asked
• Answer questions when asked
• When complete, software is ready to run

Run from Hard Drive

• Much faster than running program from CD
• File is copied from CD to hard drive, then
  installed

Run from Hard Drive

• Procedure
• Insert CD or disk
• Click on My Computer to see all the drives
• Click the drive with file you want to install
• Right click on the file and choose copy
• Open the destination drive
• Right click and choose paste
• Double click on the file to run the program
• Remove the source disk or CD

Download to Hard Drive

• Executable files are downloaded (copied) to your
  computer
• You may be able to run them
• Or you may need to install first

• Procedure
• Open explorer and go to the website where the
  files are
• Right click on the file or choose download
• Select a place to put the files (drive on your
  computer)
• May have to install the file after download
• Beware of viruses!
• Run program

Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel

• This utility will install the program for you
• Put the CD or disk in
• Run Add/Remove Programs and go

• Procedure
• Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
• Double click on Add or Remove Programs
• Window shows you the currently installed programs
• ON the left hand side of the screen, click Add
  Program

• Follow on screen directions
• Program will be installed

Ways to uninstall programs on your computer

• Delete files- OK
• Does not always delete all the files
• Uninstall choice on program menu- Better
• Use programs own uninstall program
• Use the Add/Remove programs utility- Best
• Removes all program related files

Delete files

• If you delete the executable file it will not run
• Things left behind
• Registry entries
• Data files
• They fill up your hard drive with orphan files
• To delete
• Right click on file, choose delete

• Some software provides its own uninstall program
• Click on it and away you go
• Deletes executable file, data and registry
  entries
• Some programs do not include this
• Go to Start, Programs, program you want to delete
  and Uninstall
