Characteristics Structures
  • A. Appeared 400 million years ago.
  • B. Heterotrophic (does not contain chlorophyll)
  • - Break down organic material (leaves, branches,
dead animals, bread, fruit and waste) by
secreting an enzyme, breaking it down, and
    absorbing it.
  • - Can be a parasite (feed off of host) like
    ringworm of athletes foot.
  • Contain filamentous bodies long slender
    filaments.
  • Cells of the fungi contain chitin tough, sugar
    outside.
  • Hyphae (the fuzzy stuff you see). When the
hyphae grow together in a bunch, they form
    mycelium.

Reproduction
  • Reproduces by releasing spores sexually
asexually from structures at the tip of the
hyphae. Air carries the spores to their new
    habitat, where

  • they grow.

7
Relationships
  • Mycorrhiza mutual relationship between fungi
and vascular plants. The hyphae help transport
phosphorous and other minerals from the soil to
the roots of a plant while the plant provides
    carbohydrates
  • to the fungus.

8
Relationships
  • Lichen mutual relationship between fungus and a
photosynthetic partner. The fungus protects the
plant during harsh conditions (drought or cold)
and the plant provides the fungus with
    carbohydrates.

Together, they help bring nitrogen to the soil.
They can also grow on rocks. They are usually
the first to grow in an environment.
