Tech Refresh Enhancements
  • To relieve site personnel of repetitious system
    or troubleshooting activities, many support
    functions are now automated or performed by the
    SMCOs at the TFMS Consolidated Service Desk
  • Included are all SUP mode script functions and
    anything requiring Root password
  • Onsite SA and TO staff may be asked by the SMCOs
    to assist with activities such as fileserver
    swaps, HW/SW diagnostics, workstation reboots,
    etc
  • Hewlett Packard Open View Operations (HP OVO)
    agents will be installed on the new workstations
    and fileservers. OVO provides automated
    monitoring and will deliver 24x7 equipment status
    information to the SMCOs

Tech Refresh Enhancements (cont.)
  • To enhance system security, the new equipment
    does not support removable media such as CDs,
    DVDs, or thumb drives. A new FTP process will be
    covered later
  • To provide system stability, a Redundant Array of
    Independent Discs (RAID) has been installed on
    all servers and workstations
  • One drive will function as the primary
  • The secondary drive will be updated regularly to
    mirror the primary drive
  • If the primary drive fails, the secondary drive
    automatically takes over the primary function
  • The SMCOs will be alerted by the OVO agent and
    will contact HP for a replacement drive

  • Desktop FAQs
  • The panel bar can be hidden, but not moved as it
    could be in the old operating system
  • The RHEL Applications, Places, System, TFMS, and
    browser launcher menu icons are locked on the
    panel bar and cannot be moved, hidden, or
    deleted. All other icons can be moved
  • There is only one screensaver a blank screen.
    Adjust the time limit for screensaver activation
    using the System menu
  • Fonts for individual applications can be changed.
    System-wide font changes are made from the
    System menu on the panel bar

  • Desktop FAQs
  • Windows can be rolled up/down with a double click
  • The workspace switcher looks different by
    default. Right click on it to access the
    preferences to put names on the workspaces,
    rearrange them in stacked rows, or add more
    workspaces
  • Workstations have an onboard speaker. On the
    right side of the GNOME panel there is a speaker
    icon. Click on the icon to open up a dialog box
    to mute or adjust the volume as needed. To check
    the sound level, open a terminal window and press
    the backspace key to force a beep

  • Web Browser FAQs
  • The browser for the TFMS workstation has changed
    from Sea Monkey to Firefox
  • SeaMonkey was a web browser and an HTML editor,
    while Firefox is strictly a web browser
  • The items on the Firefox menu bar differ from
    SeaMonkey
  • The Globe launcher on the panel bar was
    configured to start a single browser
  • You can also use the Applications menu to open a
    browser

  • Web Browser FAQs
  • The Globe launcher on the GNOME panel was
    configured to start only a single browser window,
    but you can add your own launcher to the panel
    bar and use it to open multiple windows
  • To add your own launcher to the panel bar, click
    on Applications, Internet, Firefox Web Browser,
    right click on Firefox Web Browser, and choose
    Add this launcher to panel

  • Printer FAQs
  • The new printers can perform duplex printing.
    For individual jobs, you can choose the 2-sided
    option from the Page Setup tab in your print
    property options
  • Your NTML SA may have to edit the PRINT_MODE
    keyword found in the NTML configuration file and
    change the option to postscript to successfully
    print your logs
  • To change the printer defaults, please call the
    TFMS Consolidated Service Desk

  • System Admin FAQs
  • The Remote Access Commands like rlogin have been
    replaced with the Secure Shell Commands (slogin,
    scp, ssh, etc.) to provide a more secure
    operating environment
  • Files can be copied from one workstation to
    another using the secure shell commands
  • The NTML and TSD configuration files are located
    in the same directories as in the old system.
    They can still be edited with a Text Editor, such
    as gedit or VI

  • System Admin FAQs
  • NTML and TSD configuration files can be still
    copied from one workstation to another over your
    local network. Use the secure shell Commands
  • The TM Shell tool is no longer available for
    scheduling CRON jobs . Bur you can create CRON
    jobs and schedule them from the command prompt in
    a terminal window
  • You do not have to have the ROOT password to
    create and execute a CRON job

The TFMS FTP Process
  • The procedure meets all FAA TFMS security
    requirements and policies
  • The FTP process transfers files from the TFMS
    network to the Administrative / Mission Support
    network
  • Secured TFMS Web Portal servers connect to FTP
    servers at the TFMS Consolidated Service Desk

The TFMS FTP Process (cont.)
  • A Linux script is used to perform the transfer
    from the local TFMS workstation to the TFMS Web
    Portal (FTP Server)
  • The user runs the script and identifies a file(s)
    to be transferred
  • The script executes a background transfer of the
    file(s) to the Service Desk where the files are
    stored on the TFMS Web Portal server
  • The TFMS Web Portal server can be accessed from
    FAA administrative workstations

The TFMS FTP Process (cont.)
  • Each site has a folder on the TFMS Web Portal for
    storing the files uploaded from the TFMS network
  • Authorized users to the website can download
    files to an admin workstation
  • A quota of 5 gigabytes per site is the current
    limit
  • Uploaded files are retained for 60 days before
    they are automatically removed

TFMS Web Portal Server
  • File size can not exceed 5 megabytes. The TFMS
    Consolidated Service Desk can assist with
    transfer of a larger file
  • Executables cannot be transferred
  • Weather files cannot be transferred
  • Users may set options that effect how the browser
    displays the download window
  • To set options to edit the Browser Preferences
  • Set options for a default download folder for all
    downloads
  • Set options to display the download manager when
    a download begins and upon completion

  • Logon to a TFMS workstation
  • Open a terminal window
  • Change the directory to the directory where the
    file is located
  • Identify the file to be transferred
  • Transfer the desired file by typing the

  • Connect to the TFMS Web Portal from an
    Administrative / Mission Support workstation
  • A Web Portal Page menu entry link is displayed on
    the Admin users page for the Admin File Downloads
