You might see these words when reading about the
crucifixion. What do they mean?
  • Chastise to purify by beating or whipping.
(Chastise and Chaste are similar, arent they?)
  • Scourged a punishment where a person is
whipped. Under the Roman method of "scourging,"
the person was stripped and tied in a bending
posture to a pillar, or stretched on a frame. The
"scourge" was made of leather thongs, weighted
with sharp pieces of bone or lead.
  • Pilate - This man was probably connected with the
Roman family of the Pontii, and called Pilate
    from the Latin pileatus.
  • Sepulchre - burying place, grave.
  • Golgotha The site where Jesus was crucified.
(We get the word calvary from the word
Golgotha, which means "a skull" (Latin calvaria))
