Cave Paintings
  • The first and largest set of cave paintings was
    discovered in Lasceaux, France.
  • The paintings are estimated to be from
    10,000-15,000 B.C.

3
Lasceuax Caves
  • These caves were discovered in France by four
    teenage boys.
  • The images depicted are mostly of animals, and it
is thought that they used these pictures to gain
some kind of control over the hunt.

4
Lasceaux contd
  • Images such as bulls, stags, and horses can be
    clearly seen.
  • Many of the pictures also have hacthet marks in
them, which leads some to believe that the
artists were trying to communicate and/or
influence the outcome of the hunt through their
    paintings.

5
How did they paint?
  • It is believed that the cave painting artists
made paints from the melted fat of the animals
    they killed.
  • They then added colors to the melted fat by use
of natural ingredients, such a berries, leaves,
    etc.

6
Even though theyre old
  • The cave paintings are one of the oldest known
works of art in the world, and are clearly one of
    the first works of art.
  • But theyre still pretty good.
