Title: We are going to take a look at an important person in God’s scheme of redemption.

1
We are going to take a look at an important
person in Gods scheme of redemption.
Mary, The Mother of Jesus
2
  • Mary is introduced by Luke, with the visit by
    the Angel Gabriel.

3
Luke
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was
sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was
Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name
was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said
to her, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is
with you blessed are you among women!"
126-28
4
  • Mary is introduced by Luke, with the visit by
    the Angel Gabriel.
  • She is mostly remembered for her role in the
    birth of Christ. (Luke 129-56)
  • Mary is worthy to be called blessed (Luke
148), but we need to distinguish between
  • What the Bible actually teaches about Mary.
  • What has been taught by sources outside of the
    Bible.

5
To have a proper understanding of Mary, the
mother of Jesus, we first must look at the
Biblical record.
6
  • Her Ancestry
  • Lukes genealogy of Jesus is thought to be
    through Mary, not Joseph.

7
Luke
Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about
thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the
son of Joseph, the son of Heli,
323
8
  • Her Ancestry
  • Lukes genealogy of Jesus is thought to be
    through Mary, not Joseph.
  • -Note that Jesus was supposed to be the son of
    Joseph
  • -But was of Heli (Marys father)
  • -This explains the apparent contradiction between
    Matthews and Lukes genealogies.
  • -Mary descended from David through Nathan. (Luke
    331)
  • -Joseph descended from David through Solomon.
    (Matthew 16)

9
  • Her Ancestry
  • That she was descended from David is also implied
    by
  • -The angels statement that Jesus would receive
the throne of His father David.

10
Luke
31 "And behold, you will conceive in your womb
and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name
JESUS. 32 "He will be great, and will be called
the Son of the Highest and the Lord God will
give Him the throne of His father David.
131-32
11
  • Her Ancestry
  • That she was descended from David is also implied
    by
  • -The angels statement that Jesus would receive
the throne of His father David.
  • -Other similar statements that imply a flesh and
    blood relationship through Mary are

12
Acts
"Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God
had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit
of his body, according to the flesh, He would
raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

Acts
concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was
born of the seed of David according to the flesh,

2nd Timothy
Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David,
was raised from the dead according to my gospel,
28
15
  • Her Virginity
  • It is clearly attested to by Luke.
    (Luke 126-38)
  • Likewise by Matthew. (Matthew 118-25)

16
Matthew
21 "And she will bring forth a Son, and you
shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His
people from their sins." 22 So all this was done
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by
the Lord through the prophet, saying 23
"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear
a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,"
which is translated, "God with us." 24 Then
Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the
angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him
his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had
brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called
His name JESUS.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows
After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with
child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her
husband, being a just man, and not wanting to
make her a public example, was minded to put her
away secretly. 20 But while he thought about
these things, behold, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son
of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary
your wife, for that which is conceived in her is
of the Holy Spirit.
118-25
17
  • Her Family Relations
  • She likely had normal relations with her husband
    Joseph after Jesus birth.
  • -Joseph did not know her until she had Jesus.

18
Matthew
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as
the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to
him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she
had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he
called His name JESUS.
124-25
19
  • Her Family Relations
  • She likely had normal relations with her husband
    Joseph after Jesus birth.
  • -Joseph did not know her until she had Jesus.
  • -This strongly implies he did afterwards.
  • She likely had other children
  • -Jesus was firstborn Son

20
Luke
And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and
wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in
a manger, because there was no room for them in
the inn.
27
21
  • Her Family Relations
  • She likely had normal relations with her husband
    Joseph after Jesus birth.
  • -Joseph did not know her until she had Jesus.
  • -This strongly implies he did afterwards.
  • She likely had other children
  • -Jesus was firstborn Son
  • -This normally implies that there were other
    children.

22
  • Her Family Relations
  • Jesus is said to have four brothers and at least
    two sisters.

23
Matthew
55 "Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His
mother called Mary? And His brothers James,
Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 "And His sisters,
are they not all with us? Where then did this Man
get all these things?"
1355-56
24
  • Her Family Relations
  • Jesus is said to have four brothers and at least
    two sisters.
  • -Some claim that these were children of Joseph
    from a previous marriage.
  • -That they were actually cousins of Jesus.
  • -Taken at face value, it is clear that Jesus had
    siblings.

25
  • Her Character
  • We learn a lot from Gabriels visit and her
subsequent visit with Elizabeth. (Luke 126-56)
  • -Her faith in God, humility, obedience.
  • -Her praise of God, and familiarity with the Old
    Testament writings.
  • She demonstrated faithfulness in her service to
    God.
  • -The circumcision of her Son. (Luke 221)
  • -His purification and presentation in the temple.
    (Luke 222-28)

26
Luke
22 Now when the days of her purification
according to the law of Moses were completed,
they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to
the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the
Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be
called holy to the LORD"), 24 and to offer a
sacrifice according to what is said in the law of
the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves or two young
pigeons." 25 And behold, there was a man in
Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was
just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of
Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And
it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
that he would not see death before he had seen
the Lord's Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit
into the temple. And when the parents brought in
the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the
custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms
and blessed God and said

  • Her gradual Separation
  • Her primary task was to bear the savior and raise
    Him up.
  • As He began His work, there was a necessary
    gradual separation.
  • -Intimated early on, when the boy Jesus was at
    the temple. (Luke 241-51)
  • -Evidenced further at the wedding feast in Cana.
    (John 21-5)

29
John
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana
of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2
Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to
the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine,
the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no
wine." 4 Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does
your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not
yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants,
"Whatever He says to you, do it."

    teaching. (Matthew 1246-50)

31
Matthew
46 While He was still talking to the multitudes,
behold, His mother and brothers stood outside,
seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to
Him, "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are
standing outside, seeking to speak with You." 48
But He answered and said to the one who told Him,
"Who is My mother and who are My brothers?" 49
And He stretched out His hand toward His
disciples and said, "Here are My mother and My
brothers! 50 "For whoever does the will of My
Father in heaven is My brother and sister and
mother."

33
  • Her gradual Separation
  • She is at least seen with the disciples of her
    Son, following His ascension. (Acts
    112-15)
  • Her role from being mother of Jesus has shifted
to being a disciple of Jesus.

34
What may surprise some is that once the church
began on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2), we never
read of Mary again in the Scriptures!
But over the past 2000 years there have been
quite a few Extra Biblical Deveopments
35
To Be Continued
36
Extra Biblical Developments
Mary, The Mother of Jesus
37
  • Perpetual Virginity
  • From the second century A.D., many have taught
    that Mary remained a virgin.
  • That Jesus brothers and sisters were either
    cousins or step-siblings.
  • This view has appealed to those who view marital
    sex as less than holy.
  • -Joseph did not know her until she had Jesus.

38
Hebrews
Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed
undefiled but fornicators and adulterers God
will judge.
134
39
  • Perpetual Virginity
  • From the second century A.D., many have taught
    that Mary remained a virgin.
  • That Jesus brothers and sisters were either
    cousins or step-siblings.
  • This view has appealed to those who view marital
    sex as less than holy.
  • She could have remained a virgin, but Biblical
    evidence suggests otherwise.

40
  • Theotokos (God-Bearer)
  • During the fourth to sixth centuries A.D.,
theotokos became a catchword of Christological
orthodoxy, that stressed the divinity of Christ.
  • Though not a Biblical term, as first used, it did
    teach truth about Mary.

41
Luke
And the angel answered and said to her, "The
Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of
the Highest will overshadow you therefore, also,
that Holy One who is to be born will be called
the Son of God.
135
42
  • Theotokos (God-Bearer)
  • During the fourth to sixth centuries A.D.,
theotokos became a catchword of Christological
orthodoxy, that stressed the divinity of Christ.
  • Though not a Biblical term, as first used, it did
    teach truth about Mary.
  • But it has come to suggest erroneous Mariological
    connotations. (Mary as the
    Mother of God)

43
  • Intercession Of Mary
  • During the middle ages, some believed it required
the intercession of saints to find forgiveness
    for post-baptismal sins.
  • Though not a Biblical term, as first used, it did
    teach truth about Mary.

44
1st John
My little children, these things I write to you,
so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we
have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ
the righteous.
21
45
  • Intercession Of Mary
  • During the middle ages, some believed it required
the intercession of saints to find forgiveness
    for post-baptismal sins.
  • According to this view, who better to intercede
for us than Mary, the Mother of God and Lady in
    the courts of heaven?
  • Biblically, it says

46
Romans
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who
died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even
at the right hand of God, who also makes
intercession for us.
834
47
1st Timothy
For there is one God and one Mediator between God
and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
25
48
  • Veneration Of Mary
  • Together with the intercession of Mary came the
veneration (profound respect or reverence) of
    Mary.
  • Distinctions were made
  • -Latria (true worship) is proper to God alone.
  • Hyperdulia (extreme honor) is proper to Mary,
    Queen of heaven.
  • Dulia (honor) to the saints.

49
  • Veneration Of Mary
  • But in practice, such distinctions are of little
significance adulation to Mary in prayers and
hymns have sometimes surpassed those given to the
    Godhead.
  • Yet not even the apostles nor angels accepted
    adulation or obeisance (homage).

50
Acts
25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and
fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26 But
Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up I myself
am also a man."
1025-26
51
Revelation
8 Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And
when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship
before the feet of the angel who showed me these
things. 9 Then he said to me, "See that you do
not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of
your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep
the words of this book. Worship God."
228-9
52
  • Immaculate Conception
  • In the nineteenth century, Pius IX decreed the
    doctrine of immaculate Conception.
  • Many think this refers to the virgin birth of
Jesus, but it declares that Mary was conceived
without Original Sin, preparing her to be a
    suitable mother for Jesus.
  • This also postulates that Mary went on to live a
life without sin (contradicting 1st John 110).

53
1st John
If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a
liar, and His word is not in us.
110
54
  • Assumption Of Mary
  • In 1950, Pius XII decreed that Mary, at the end
of her life, was physically taken into heaven.
  • His idea first came from apocryphal
fourth-century writings (The Passing of Mary).
  • It became an established teaching across the
Eastern, Western, Coptic and Oriental churches
from at least the late seventh century.
  • Views differ as to whether she died or fell
asleep before being taken up into heaven.

55
  • Conclusion
  • Extra Biblical developments continue in
    Mariology
  • -Mary as the mother of all Christians.
  • -Mary as Mediatrix.
  • -Mary as Co-Redemtix
  • -Mary as Queen of heaven
  • -Reparations to the Virgin Mary.
  • Mary certainly occupies a place of honor and
    dignity in the Scriptures.
  • -For her role as the human mother of the Messiah.
  • -For her example of faith, humility, and devotion.

56
  • Conclusion
  • We can agree with
  • -Gabriel Blessed are you among women! (Luke
    128)
  • -Elizabeth Blessed are you among women! (Luke
    142)
  • But Mary was not perfect, at times she possessed
    bewilderment
  • -At the statements made when her Son was
presented in the temple. (Luke 233-35)
  • -At the conduct of her Son in the temple when He
    was twelve. (Luke 248-50)

57
A balanced view of Mary and her role in the plan
of redemption will be limited to the Biblical
evidence, for it is evident how far people will
go when left to their own devices, and we have
warnings not to add to the Word of God
58
Deuteronomy
"You shall not add to the word which I command
you, nor take from it, that you may keep the
commandments of the LORD your God which I command
you.
42
59
Proverbs
Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and
you be found a liar.
306
60
Revelation
18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words
of the prophecy of this book If anyone adds to
these things, God will add to him the plagues
that are written in this book 19 and if anyone
takes away from the words of the book of this
prophecy, God shall take away his part from the
Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the
things which are written in this book.
